Core 4 No More: The Motherfucking Off-Season Thread

I think the fears about a potential Marner trade debacle are realistic, but I think our completely reasonable doom and gloom brigade isn't lining all of the pieces up in their assessments. These types of trades go off the rail when the market for the player becomes super limited through whatever mechanism. I don't think the market for Marner would be limited at all. There's likely to be 10+ teams interested and at least a handful of them that Mitch would be willing to waive to go to. As soon as you have 3-4 suitors involved in the process, it makes a disaster of a trade very unlikely. Those disasters happen when you feel like you have to make a move aaaaand some sort of external force (NMC, etc) is limiting your market. Kadri is a good example. The organization felt like it had to make a move, placing a false time sensitivity over getting full value for him and then Kadri used his NMC to block a move to Calgary (Brodie + Jankowski) which precipitated taking the 2nd place offer instead.....which ended up bad, obviously.

Tre's Big Trades
  • Tkachuk for Weeger, Huberdeau and a 1st
  • Hamilton, Fox and Ferland for Lindholm and Hanifin
  • 1st and two 2nds for Hamilton
In fairness his blockbuster deals may be the high point of his resume. And he was in a bad spot having to trade Tkachuk and Fox. Hamilton was getting killed in Calgary too.

from the past he likely doesn't trade Marner without getting a top pair dman back.

Huberdeau collapsing the moment he left the state of Florida makes that Tkachuk trade look pretty ugly. But him putting value in Weegar provides a bit of hope.

I'm not worried about their being a strong market for Marner. I'm worried that Treliving is going to be the one making the trade. That is fucking frightening.
But the alternative is doing nothing about Marner, which should also frighten you because once his contract expires, you're either losing him for nothing or, if you manage to trade him late, pennies on the dollar, or you resign him for an insane amount of cash that puts you further into cap hell. Pick the least horrible option.

the contract is awful too, but I put that more on CGY ownership than Tree, given what we've heard about the Tkachuk negotiations...

Tkachuk was his fault he was in that spot. He gave him 3 years to save 'cap".

And he had to give him that three year bridge deal because he’d boxed himself in by overpaying shitty depth & grit in free agency.
And he and shanny all but diagnosed their issues today by saying they don't need more skill. They need character, grit, and leadership. That's what will help them score more. Not an injection of skill. Shanny quite literally said that being in a good position defensively will help them score more goals.

They're doomed.

But their chances are all generated by being unsexy, plodding and ugly and being anti rush chances. So it sounds like they don't plan on changing the way they play. They will change the players that are more suited for the cycle and anti rush game.

Anyway the point is, I've watched the last two playoffs and my takeaway is that they need to get sexier, not less sexy. Tre and Shanny obviously disagree. Maybe they're right.
