Core 4 No More: The Motherfucking Off-Season Thread

I'm not sure about Marner but at least part of the cores problems offensively is stylistic-based. Hyman technically "sucked" in the playoffs as a Leaf too. Except he didn't actually suck in the playoffs. The leafs, especially in his latter years, coached and built their team to try to not lose as opposed to trying to win once playoffs come around.

Hyman didn't suddenly get better, he just joined a team that isn't afraid to play hockey.

Yeah, Hyman is a pretty significant cautionary tale re: Marner's playoff struggles. If we weren't so allergic to rush chances in the playoffs and our PP didn't break as soon as opposition coaches got to make an adjustment against it, I think Mitchy's playoff issues would be way less glaring.

There's no point engaging in hypotheticals like that. Whatever Marner might become elsewhere doesn't alter the fact that he isn't that now with the Leafs and, after this many years, is never going to be that with the Leafs. If your decision making process is ruled by your fear of what might happen, you never make the move you need to make when you need to make it.

Who cares what Marner does or becomes after he leaves? You need to get rid of him because he isn't doing what you need him to be doing right now.

Besides, the likelihood of that clown growing a pair and showing up the way Pasta did against Tkachuk for example is so unlikely it's not worth worrying about.
And yet you know he'd be the prick scoring the OT winner against TO in a future game #7

Rangers added Jack Roslovic at the deadline and he's playing quite a bit and playing really well. Too fast, not gritty enough.

If there was the possibility of concussion stuff of course you don't say anything about that...it's the playoffs.

It was also obvious to anyone who uses their eyes for seeing that Matthews was waaay off.

...in the injury stuff they didn't mention whether or not MItch was 100%, and how could he be? Interesting.

If you can unload Tavares I'd keep MItch...you don't find 100 point players at the side of the road.

We need a point shot presence on the PP.

Probably, but that has less to do with Marner and everything to do with Leafyness. And that's going to happen no matter who you trade or otherwise get rid of. It's essentially what we saw Kadri and Hyman do, except they didn't do it directly to the Leafs because they wound up out west.

But again, none of that is a good enough reason to keep Marner, especially when we know he will ask for well over $11 million on his next deal. If MLSE resigns him, or lets him play out his current deal and walk for nothing, every Leafs fan may as well defenestrate themselves right now to save time. Marner must be traded. You can't and will never win with him. Cut your losses.

You know he’s gonna push you further now in the hope you meant sexual assault.

I guess that will depend on how fast my car is going when it hits him and where it hits first. Anything is sexual if that's what you're into.

I'm getting old, I'm more or less done with fighting if I have the choice.

"I'm more or less done with fighting if I have the choice." So Leafy.

Yeah, overall I'm not optimistic at all going forward. The hope for me at this point is that the easy changes are pretty consequential and not hard to get right. Which doesn't mean Treliving can't fuck any and all of them up. Just that they're also fairly easy to make positive impacts with as well.

- Replacing Sheldon with any of the names mentioned, including Berube is probably a win. Sheldon has been a stagnant gritensity pussy for a few years now.

- Tavares isn't necessarily addition by subtraction per se as he's not a terrible player. But a new captain and the cap space moving him is likely to provide is a net positive imo. You can't have a robot captain and if we're looking for the biggest pussy on the team, he's in the running. I think he's moveable, and will actually garner something resembling a return. Something like John + Stuff for Crouse as I saw mentioned earlier is probably doable.

- If they do decide to trade Marner, I think Mitch is open to it (by media accounts he was open to it last summer if it happened) and I think there will be enough suitors that the trade is kind of hard to make a complete debacle of.

- There are goalies available in trade this summer that are probably not disasters waiting to happen. Ullmark and Saros to obvious two names and with them both going into the last year of their contracts, the degree to which we could fuck that trade up is probably limited.

With all of that said, the blueline fix is essential and their vision with it scares the shit out of me. Same with the #2-3 centre spots. Also essential, and so easy to just fill with plugs.

Tldr they're gonna try to trade Marner and/or Tavares and Brad Treliving is in charge of making those transactions.

May God bless us all
Yup was going to say the exact same thing. That was my take away too.

You all know where I stand: no way Marner can come back again next season. Absolutely no way regardless of the return.

But Tre is charge, unfortunately that may mean a shellacking.

I am ok with going through a retooling year. But without the core 4 together.
