The more and more we watch and experience the NHL, the more it feels like there is no such thing as a proper formula for success. You see winners come in all shapes and forms, with no real rhyme or reason.
It all probably just boils down to BPA under the cap. Can you get the best player available. No scrounging around for shit like Kampf and Reaves. No more "defensive specialist" who can't otherwise play, or goon who can't do shit. Legit skill and speed all the way up and down the roster, and to the extent you can get some skill and speed that comes with grit/physicality, then all the better.
If you've got that, it probably doesn't make a lick of difference who your coach is because he'll be deploying the best players suited for success in this era of the league. So really the GM is probably the most important piece of the puzzle because he's responsible for assembling that roster.
And ours looks like he's been selling shoes his whole life.
