"For whatever reason, it's not one of those run-of-the-mill, everyday type of illnesses that sort of come and go. It's lingered," Keefe said. "The effects have lingered and it's gotten worse every time he gets out on the ice asserting himself. We've just got to manage that and give him the time that he needs."

So, whenever he tries to act like a man he gets physically ill. Got it.

Well, lucky for you I can give you some real life experience. Me being a military pilot for 35 yrs with 7 flying tours in Afghanistan. Also, finished 8th in the Boston marathon (for my age class mind you...but still...and in 2013...the year of the bombing). Also was a scratch golfer. Alas. my frame was not big enough to play competitive hockey...otherwise!!

"I fly planes and ran a marathon, so I can accurately judge the mental toughness of someone who is literally in the top .00001% in one of the most physical professions in the world"

Source: Trust me bro.

I personally love when people who are soft bitches in real life, pretend that they're tougher than professional athletes mentally and or physically.

The average human has no frame of reference for how hard it is to be a professional athlete. It's the same as when professional athletes refer to being through "a war". They have no frame of reference for how hard it is to be a soldier actually facing life and death.

It's ridiculous all the way through. Just stop. You're not tough. You're not more of a "man" than they are, and you're not in a better position to know how sick someone is or can be to play the game than the team medical staff.

This is mike from buffalo call in show buffoonery. Be better.
Most of is don't get paid $11 million a year to suck it up and show up to work. Most of us in the real world are underpaid so any time we steal time from our employers is generally "owed" to us. But a guy making what 34 makes? Nope, sorry. No excuse is ever going to wash.

I think I can provide a more accurate assessment than you.

and I think neither of us can. Which is why I prefer to focus on the things that are actually observable, measurable and confined to aspects about the sport that anyone who played it growing up knows relatively well.

So now what?

Remember back in the day when that Sens fan claimed to have certain super knowlege about the mindset of high level athletes because he coached university women's volleyball?

Yeah, fun times.

Look, I enjoy your input. You know your stuff wrt the Leafs organization. Thats indisputable. But I do think too many of us are all to willing to give these guys the benefit of the doubt all too often. I have a very hard time justifying their behavior in this playoffs given their youth and the enormous sums of money dumped at their feet. We all deserve better from the whole organization. At this point they need to be called out on everything.

Fuck Auston Matthews and his stupid fucking carbon tax

I mean....thank you for your service...but can you explain why?
I took up running in my 50's with no previous running experience and within a year I was able to run the Boston marathon competitively. Hell I even ran a 1hr 16min 1/2 marry and a 16:30 5k. Makes me elite for my age group. You guys are giving these boys way to much credit for slapping a puck around...and I have played some hockey.

Okay fine. Don't compare him to a regular Joe. Compare him to other NHL players, like Marchand, for example. All things being equal, which player would you rather have in your team right now? If you answer Matthews you are delusional.

Trade Matthews and Marner to the Bruins for Marchand and the Leafs win this series with ease.

Called out for being sick enough to be pulled from the most important game of the year by medical professionals known widely for allowing players to continue playing with broken sternums and shit like that?

This is where all the tough guy, "man up", armchair bravado breaks the fuck down.

Also fwiw, the money part of the argument is entirely immaterial. Someone like Auston Matthews generates multiples in commercial value to what he's paid. He'll be worth a billion dollars or more to the organizations he plays for over the life of his career in value, and will receive 10-15% of that. This is usually the root of another silly bullshit argument we see made way too often from the armchair sport psychologist crowd.

okay. and were you extremely sick when you ran this marathon?

Yeah, I rest my fucking case. No offence mate, but you've done entirely ordinary things, but believe them to be extraordinary, and then port that experience over into a belief that you understand what you just have no frame of actual reference for. An unkind way of describing that would be to call it "delusional", but I'm not unkind so I'm not going to call it that.

These guys have spent more or less every day of their lives committed to being the best in human existence at a craft millions of people try to get good at, and they've achieved it. As part of my professional life I spend a lot of time around elite minor hockey players and families. It's complete family level commitment from age 4-5 onward to get where they are, and people who are soft in the head just don't make it there.

I get what you are saying...I'm just fed up with the never ending excuses.

Well, it seems no matter whats on the ice in Toronto they make money. Aren't most of the seats in that arena corporate?

okay. and were you extremely sick when you ran this marathon?
Nope...but like the rest of you I have been sick....even migraines!! Of course I never got the jab (COVID at least...got a lot of other crap in the military mind you). Wrt sickness I will say, when I was living in Ottawa I was guaranteed at least 2 bouts of "sickness" per year...once I moved to the coast not one day of being sick...(knock on wood).
