Exhibition GDT - Toronto vs Buffalo Part I and II

Re: Exhibition GDT - Toronto vs Buffalo

Bunch of forwards playing well for the Leafs. Kadri way better than the first game, Nylander looking dangerous, Lievo solid and Freddy having a very good game.

Goat is going to be a nice player for us.

I know it's technically a good problem to have, but it really is a shame that this organization is loaded with depth. It must suck to be a fringe guy in this organization because god damn you need to blow the doors off to crack this lineup.

Would be nice to get rid of the dead weight and/or make a 3 or 4 for 1 type of trade.

What happened to Sparks? I missed some of the game.

Kaskisuo looked pretty good from what I saw.

It sure looks like there's a decent crop of secondary prospects knocking on the door. Time for some Lou magic.

I think Freddy has enough of a unique skillset in comparison to the rest of this group that he'll have the 3rd line C job within the next 2 years. He has enough speed and skill to play with higher skill wingers, but he's huge and defensively responsible. Yeah, we're loaded with depth, but we're more loaded with shifty high skilled winger and less loaded with big two way centres.

Re: Exhibition GDT - Toronto vs Buffalo

He's looking NHL ready. Very smart player and great penalty killer, Laich should be vulnerable.

I'd prefer to see Freddy as a top 2 centre for the Marlies this year to see how much offensive confidence we can milk out of him before his carrying tools land him in the show full time. There's some offensive creativity and soft hands in there that it we rush it to the NHL because of his IQ, size and speed on the defensive side of the puck, I doubt we'll ever see. Give him the opportunity to be a 60+ point centre in the AHL this season and he probably carries more of his offensive game over into the NHL instead of settling in as a checker at a young age.

Re: Exhibition GDT - Toronto vs Buffalo

yeah we need centers.

i'm still not sold on him being good though.

Re: Exhibition GDT - Toronto vs Buffalo

Kaskisuo has potential.

Yeah, I was impressed. Decent athlete, quiet in net, pretty strong butterfly technique, wasn't overplaying shooters. Hopefully he pushes Bibeau out of that Marlies spot at some point before Christmas.

Don't think Bibeau should have any priority for making the Marlies. Kaskisuo and Sparks are clearly superior players.

That's fair. I know I'm reaching a bit here. Even before the Leafs drafted him I saw him as a guy with tools that tend to "play up" in the NHL if he learns to love the front of the net. His skating has taken a pretty big jump forward as well, I still think there's some sneaky upside in him.

Fair point. I see him more of a 4th line center type though. I don't think he has proven enough that he can chip in offensively. Can't have a complete offensive black hole on the third line. He's decent though.. He can skate and his hands, while rocks, aren't like a typical 4th liner.

Incumbents are incumbents though. They'll likely make Kaskisuo steal the job from him by torching the ECHL first.

Had a similar thought as I was posting. He'd get buried on the fourth line if he was in the NHL now. Don't think there's much there offensively, but never hurts to give him a chance to develop it.

Re: Exhibition GDT - Toronto vs Buffalo

With that said, if Nylander is a center long-term.. Matthews-Nylander-Kadri is a fine top 3. Goat doesn't need to be anything more than a 4th liner.

Bibeau has burned the many ripe chances he's been given. Someone upstairs sees something, I guess.

This year will tell us where his upside is imo. He's going to get a ton of opportunity on the Marlies. If he's not able to push into the top 6 and put up legitimate numbers (55-60+ point pace) then yeah, we're probably looking at 4th line upside.

I love his tools - and still even like the pick.

But apparently he was a pretty poor possession guy even in the AHL last year, which surprised me.

Re: Exhibition GDT - Toronto vs Buffalo

Guy is built like a clydesdale, just needs to use it more. I know he doesn't have to be a bruiser to be effective, but he should be able to protect the puck better. It's a mentality more than anything.
