Exhibition GDT - Toronto vs Buffalo Part I and II

Re: Exhibition GDT - Toronto vs Buffalo

dubas couldn't have been a fan of the martin, polak, etc deals.

Re: Exhibition GDT - Toronto vs Buffalo

Heh. Oh, Simmons. Kevin McGran, Steve Simmons and Dave Feschuk really all need to go the way of Al Strachan and Howard Berger. The era of the Toronto sports media being filled with bitter muck-rakers who exist to manufacture controversy should be over and done with, already.

I mean, it was only a few months ago that Dubas declined to even be considered for a GM position (Arizona) that he probably would have had a great shot at. Definitely sounds like a guy that's being marginalized and moving towards the exit.

dubas couldn't have been a fan of the martin, polak, etc deals.
You never know. Dubas is also the guy who, as GM of the Marlies, brought in a pair of enforcers (Rich Clune & Justin Johnson).

Yeah I mean.. This offseason kind of proves he doesn't really have much pull. If you've ever heard him talk about analytics in those conferences you'd know how much he despises the eye test and intangibles discussion when evaluating players.

Do people expect Dubas to get his own way all the time?

Its been stated many times they sit together as a group and may not always personally agree on every decision but everyone gets a chance to state their opinion

Well I'd expect maybe at least once per off-season? Seems to me like they went against his philosophy this summer.

I don't understand this sentiment. He isn't the GM. He is the assistant. He gives input like every other person on that team. Doesn't mean all players he recommends for or against actually end up, or are left off, the team.

Yeah this. If his recommendations were acted on all the time, he'd be the GM.

Yeah that's what I'm saying. It's just very clear that he has little, if any, power or pull in the decisions that they make. I'm not saying that I expect him to run the team as the assistant GM.. But you can bet that he voiced his opinion and disagreed with nearly everything they did this summer and clearly they did not respect him enough to listen.

This is pure speculation based on the belief that he is against any move that isn't analytics based. He's shot that rumor down a few times in interviews.

Re: Exhibition GDT - Toronto vs Buffalo

Random comments from the game last night ....

- I think our forwards played better in Game 1, ironically from game they couldn't score any goal

- Nylander and Kadri are easily our best F, and that shouldn't be a surprise. I think Leivo and Dermott had a decent game too.

- Sparks played well, which is a nice change. Kukisuo (?!) played MUCH better than what I saw in the rookie tournament. Given he never played on NA rink before, I can chalk this up to adjustment ... and if he can keep this up, he and Sparks should share the net with the Marlies this season

- Gauthier played a decent game, but once again the biggest reason I don't think Freddie has much of an NHL future is he has about zero offensive skills / talent for the NHL level. He has good positioning, decent speed, good reach, and good defensive awareness, but if he is to be a guy who picks up 5 pts in an 82 games season in the NHL, he simply doesn't cut it for 3rd liner, and he is not tenacious enough to be a 4th liner who plays 8 min a game. I think he needs to show he can at least score somewhat in the AHL before he can make it in the NHL

- As a team we didn't play very well defensively, allowing 38 shots by the Sabres, especially in the 1st when Buffalo basically took the game to us with their forecheck and their speed

Time for encore tonight

Re: Exhibition GDT - Toronto vs Buffalo

I don't know. Fredrik Anderson seems to be an advanced goalie stats darling. Really Enroth too. And they also picked up guys like Moore and Rychel. And nevermind their draft strategy to pick overagers which is completely analytics driven. Whose to say Dubas has no impact on any of the Leafs offseason moves.

Dubas explained that his background in scouting and his growing interest in the quantitative work happening in baseball led him to incorporate similar ideas into his scouting.

He said using statistical measurement was a part of hockey and that he finds it valuable for player evaluation and improving the game, but it is "not the be all and end all." He stated that, "old fashioned subjective analysis and watching of players," is still part of what they do.

Re: Exhibition GDT - Toronto vs Buffalo

I thought Dubas wasnt allowed in the inner circle. Steve Simmons wrong again? Weird

Didn't know about that. Dubas was there early (saw him an hour before the game when I first got there) and sat in the box with Lou the whole game and then left with him. Seemed like he was right in the inner circle and is still being groomed to be the future GM of the Leafs.

Simmons trying to get clicks and readers. Has as much legs as his hotdog story

Just an FYI, that's not true. Kaskisuo grew up playing on big ice in Finland, that's true, but he's been playing full-time in North America since the 2013/14 season. First he spent one year in the North American Hockey League (a junior league similar to the USHL), and then he's spent the last two years playing for the University of Minnesota-Duluth in the NCAA.

Honestly, not really. Analytics people highly value HD save % and his is average at best. Many nerds believe Bernier is a comparable goalie (and Reimer of course much better).

Re: Exhibition GDT - Toronto vs Buffalo

I still feel like the team analytics at the NHL level are probably miles ahead of what we focus on. They just have better data.

"the thinking in hockey circles" = "stuff I thought of on the can this morning"
