For Borje - The Toronto Maple Leafs 2023 Stanley Cup Champions Thread

A sweep is still the Leafiest possible outcome, no?

Coming back to lose in seven, while hilarious, would at least allow the team and fans to salvage some pride.
On Vancouver sports radio, they just pointed out that the Leafs haven’t won a second round game since 2004. So yes, this is the leafiest way, and it will give opposing fans the most pleasure.

what's funny is that if they had just won this winnable round then they would have been able to say they've gone as deep into the playoffs as any leafs team in history.

The path was laid out for them.

Yep. Win this round and at least be competitive in a round three loss, and rightly or wrongly, management, the coaching staff and the players all would’ve been pretty much immune from criticism this off-season.

The bar was that low, and they still couldn’t manage to step over it.

it's just fucking shocking and embarrassing the effort they've put forth.

it was like after they beat Tampa, they just stopped trying and dropped the intensity. like Tampa was their cup and they were satisfied with that.

a stretch in game two stands out, when we were up 2-0 and the Panthers got pissed and started pushing back both physically and in their play. we just completely lay back and took it. no push back. emblematic of this group for too many fucking years.

it sucks cause they're literally the most talented bunch of losers I've ever seen play for this team, and watching them in the regular season is such a damn treat. too bad they don't seem to have any interest in the playoffs though.

16-17 (WSH): EV 48.0xgf%, 47.2gf% --- ALL 49.8xgf%, 46.6gf%
17-18 (BOS): EV 48.6xgf%, 41.5gf% --- ALL 46.9xgf%, 42.6gf%
18-19 (BOS): EV 51.2xgf%, 51.6gf% --- ALL 44.9xgf%, 41.5gf%
19-20 (CBJ): EV 52.1xgf%, 23.3gf% --- ALL 50.4xgf%, 46.5gf%
20-21 (MTL): EV 56.2xgf%, 56.1gf% --- ALL 58.1xgf%, 55.7gf%
21-22 (TBL): EV 50.7xgf%, 54.8gf% --- ALL 49.9xgf%, 50.2gf%
22-23 (TB/FL): EV 49.3xgf%, 45.1gf% -- ALL 50.1xgf%, 47.7gf%

So as bad a performance at evens as our first two years, with the ALL situations numbers goosed by us having double the PPs.

That 2-0 lead is where this series turned, IMO. Instead of upping the intensity and pressing their advantage, the Leafs started playing like a cross of the Harlem Globetrotters and a team coasting towards the end of a blowout win with a few minutes left.

Then Florida rammed it back down their throats and they haven’t had an answer since.

yup, as soon as Florida started pushing back, the Leafs basically folded, and haven't returned since.

Leafs Core Four (Matthews/Marner/Tavares/Nylander) Combined Numbers

Vs Lightning: 13 Goals, 34 Points, 22 Even-Strength Points, +11 Rating
Vs Panthers: 0 Goals, 4 Points, 2 Even-Strength Points, -10 Rating

I wonder what the problem is...
