Hasek was stupid good at that point. He had a .961 at that tournamebt. Only gave up 6 goals in 6 games, and I highly doubt the Czech d was that good.

Make it a best of 7 and the Czechs don't win gold.

Yeah exactly. They did the Olympics for 20 years then stopped and only did 1 wold cup, then nothing for 10 years.

iirc it was the IOC that changed the usual deal and decided to stop paying all the player costs - travel, accomadations, insurance - that they had always paid before. then add in the fact the games wouldn't be close to primetime.

and iirc missing the 2022 olympics was a covid thing, not able to take time off after missing so much time before.

The first 3 years of Hasek's .930 run had GPG of 3.24, 2.99, and 3.14. The 3.24 is the highest goal total since, and the 3.14 is tied with 22/23 for 2nd.

Hasek was just unfuckingbelievable.

it's crazy how much damage was done to the sport by the NHLPA receiving horrific advice heading into 2004, and the hockey media being absolute morons and demonizing the easily-hateable Bettman (probably directly at the behest of the nhlpa tbh).
