GDT #37: DEC 21 HNIC: DET @ TOR - Hutch Reborn

I just felt we kind of needed to mix it up a little bit and try to change the chemistry and spark something and try to mix up the rhythm of the game.

With that [Matthews] line, I just thought they didn’t get much going offensively. They were getting stalled in the neutral zone a lot. Also, I just didn’t really like the other lines and how things were moving. I just wanted to mix things up and I thought we got some really good shifts in that second period from the Gauthier line. I just kind of shortened things up and some guys didn’t play as much as others.

On whether the Hyman – Matthews – Marner line was something he had been wanting to try out:
I’ve got a number of things that are in the back of my mind all the time. It just kind of felt that the Matthews line was getting stalled. I thought actually the Tavares line was doing fine. But the Matthews line didn’t have much going on and I wanted to give Matthews a chance to get going and change that chemistry a little bit. I thought that with Mikheyev and Engvall with Tavares, I thought I could still trust that group playing against the Larkin line just fine. It worked out for today.

It's kind of amazing that from last January til 23 games into this season we played well below expectations and yet... we never really bothered to switch up the top lines to see how anything else worked.

Just grind it out, guys. Not grinding hard enough.

Can't tell you how many people in real life argued with me re: wanting Babcock fired.

Even when he was canned and we were on pace for 70 something points, my Facebook feed was full of upset morons.

I hated him essentially in his second year and voiced it, and well, took many a beating, but its all good now.

Nah, not even close. Think maybe BL? Or Volc? Took me a while to come around.

It was Volc who started that "Growing Divide Between Babcock and Dubas" thread.

Aahh no money to be made for making some good calls in hockey. Most important thing, is that we seem to have a really cool coach, who can bench guys, and still give them a bit of a pat on the back. I would be very surprised if there are many players that don't like Sheldon Keefe as a person.

Shanahan should be sleeping a lot sounder as of right now. And Kyle probably is having a hot toddy at home tonight with wifey...

And remember this. They KEPT Babcock's assistants.... How interesting is that?

Incidentally, watching a few other games tonight which I don't normally do. Holy smokes, the level of talent in the NHL, is truly incredible. Watched Kadri, sorry, I know he can produce, but he might be the slowest forward I have seen lately.

If we trade Barrie at the deadline no matter how far we are up in the standings and promote Lilly, that trade would be a nice win.

Get Barrie playing optimally, and trade his defensive dummy arse for a first. If possible. If Dubas accomplishes that, would be great.

Unlike previous coaching hacks, however, there was relatively little resistance to firing the cock around these parts.

Is Babcock really getting another job now that -- rookie coach -- Keefe has transformed the exact same team into a lethal force?

WIlly and Kappy got into the doghouse, eh. Great night last night boys, but you need to bring it every night.

I'm sure he will.

There's still plenty of support for old school guys in this league. Still lots of guys sour over guys like Dubas getting NHL jobs instead of the Hunters of the world.

Yeah, he'll get another shot. There's definitely lots of old school in the league.

I'm not sure how to judge him relative to others. I disliked his coaching more than any Leafs coach but Carlyle's over the past 20 years. That's a low bar. It did feel like he got outcoached regularly.

Anyone else like Keefe’s decision to sit Spezza now that Moore is back?

You might say resting the old guy blah blah blah, but you know the truth.

That said, we’ll probably see more of a rotation now with the 13th forward, but I thought Goat Tima Moore were doing some great grinding. Moore can play their style.

He'll probably do better in a place where his GM values gudpros and isn't a 34 year old. He seemed to really get his back up when Dubas took over.

Very rarely disagree with you Zeke, you are one great mind. But, who would want him right now? Remember the NHL is after all, the business of hockey in many cities.

Does any team wanting branding, want a guy who almost had a Prince Andrew couple of weeks?

Hat sales, shirt sales, t shirt sales. Big reason why MLSE wanted Marner and Nylander signed at even a premium.

The cock is seriously burned right now. I am going to go out on a limb and say, he is not going to get offered anything good in the NHL.

Heck, re invent yourself, I am all for guys making comebacks, take on a mediocre AHL team and prove you can make a monster comeback.

I have to admit, I don't think Zach Hyman would be in the NHl right now, if it wasn't for the cock. So hey, if the cock, wants to surrender huge money, and coach in the minors, I will possibly become a fan of him.

I loved his first season of coaching, thought it was great. But there is no question in my mind. I was the first to hate him. It was very early on season two. I hate his swearing and cursing. I think that is so passe and should be looked at in the same vein as racist comments. I really do.

I also think spitting on the ice should be an automatic two minute penalty, what a brutal pos neanderthal practise that is still allowed.

That has to go as well. Imagine getting tripped into a pile of spit? Does that sound cool? Or hygienic?

I just thought he was the biggest overachiever I have ever seen. But his drawback, is he was a garbage hockey player who never played any decent level hockey. He couldn't adjust. He needs to just try and collect his money, which isn't as easy as anyone thinks.

He might not collect. Nuther topic. And one I am not all that interested in. The guy has already grabbed enough.

Heck when I played half my team spat on the floor in the dressing room. I couldn't start playing tennis fast enough.

I have no doubt that he can still take a group of no skill hacks and make them look competent enough to get 80-85 points when they should have gotten 70.

But it's clear that he doesn't know what the fuck to do with a roster that isn't tailor made for his style of play.

and of course he's an epic cunt of a human being, so there's that too. That only works for a little while in any dressing room.

Doesn't work for one game in my dressing room..

Sheldon Keefe must be a dream to play for.

But he isn't a walk over guy. Even drag queens making too much money want to play. He knows how to communicate. In action and words.

I just thank the cock for Zach Hyman, guy has really turned into a beauty. And its so nice to see this board hold off on any criticism of the guy now. Real gud. Oops...
