The Habs have been a disaster but not an unmitigated one. After all, they did manage to beat you guys in 2021 after spotting you a 3-1 series lead. And now that the idiot brigade of Bergevin and Timmins has been shuffled out and the front office is now being run by competent anglos, there's hope for the future. I have no desire to see them in the playoffs until they're ready to do more than just be cannon fodder for a first round opponent because for me, the goal is winning the Cup, not merely qualifying for the round of 16. If, after 7 years of having a core group of superstar players, the most I can say is that we made it past the first round once, I'm demanding people be fired into the sun. This is such a horseshit argument, and ALWAYS the one that Sens/Habs fans like to toss around. Of course I want them to win a Cup, but there are a bunch of steps required to make that a reality, and yes "qualifying for the playoffs" is kind of important.
Don't hear much about the Habs being an "unmitigated disaster" year after year, even after losing in the COVID CUP FINALS. Weird.
A new coach isn't going to turn Marner into a player who isn't afraid of his own shadow once the playoffs begin. A new coach won't get Matthews to score more than he has this year. Sure, you need a credible goalie and better D (if that's even possible to do without getting rid of one of the sacred cows first) but what the Leafs need most is a new plan and a new President of Hockey Operations to implement it.The foundations of this team are still fine, IMO.
New coach, an upgrade on D, a goaltender. Not unsalvageable. Well, by a non idiot GM anyway.
Check. Cool with being a non-playoff team until they are ready to win a Cup. Got it. No "wasted prime years" if there are no expectations to win anything. I mean, these are a few things that make me question the coaching really. What evidence suggests this? Have we not seen enough home losses in the playoffs? Have we not seen enough putrid power plays in the playoffs? Have we not seen this group struggling to score in the playoffs?
There is plenty of evidence that the foundation is rotten.
Blow it up.
JTs cap space and C could be better spent elsewhere.
