I agree it's pretty rare. I also think that the favorable conditions for it to happens, where both the team and player have an interest to resign, and the team is out of the playoffs picture early, are also fairly rare.
I also agree that you don't turn down a 2nd round pick for Evans.
I was being sarcastic, I have absolutely no desire to be the Ducks, Sabres, Sharks, Senators, and Devils from what 2010=2022 where you are absolute crap for 10 years.

the problem with your types is that the rebuild keeps getting longer and longer, no team should take 5 years to gut a team and then another 5 to be decent. That is expecting way too much out of fans even for a fuck the fans type. No way Hughes wants to be out of the playoffs his entire reign. Draft well fine, but you need to try to get better other ways too. We cannot sit on our hands in free agency again next July, and trades have to be for more than just draft picks and over the hills players who want out of contracts.
This isnt the NFL with many ways to work around a cap
You cant buy your entire defence in UFA , or plug and play your draft picks
You cant press a keystroke and add 30 mil in cap space overnight
You cant just tell Gally , Price , and other terrible contracts to fuck off and cut them off
Free agency is absolutely shit and twice a decade a difference maker is available and he is not picking the Habs
Habs got creative with Dach and Laine but shit happens , but throwing bad money at UFA`s is useless
Hugo inherited a fucken mess , shit contracts . maybe 3 players who fit moving forward
All in a league with a hard cap , no flexibility , trade clauses , capped out teams and a system that stifles roster changes

Devils are an example of a reconstruction doing fairly well and they’re on year 8 after drafting Hischier first overall.
It takes time.
Rebuild is over when its over
Next CBA needs some flexibility and changes to foster player movement
If all your doing is caving into the agents with full trade clauses , etc....nothing will change
You need to retool every year and not kick the can down the road as most teams do
Bingo and this is year 3 for us
I dont remember if Joisy started with a fucked up mess like us

What's the difference? Rebuild takes as long as your new core is ready to take the next step.

Except for superstars, it takes about 4-5 years for players to develop.
problem then is you might have 2 yrs to compete before 1st batch is too old or too expensive

Yes, it's a very faulty process. Hopefully by then you have accumulate enough good young players to establish yourself at least as a challenger and augment your team with trades and free agents to contend. It's not fail-proof.
