GDT Game 30: VS Anaheim, Thursday, December 15, 7:00 PM EST

I agree, and 5 years is reasonable for that. A Cup is another matter.
A cup takes luck and depth. Especially luck in a healthy lineup or if not you have the depth to overcome.

A bounce here, there and you win it or lose it.

Agreed, hence why I was scoffing at the suggestion that it shouldn't take more than 5 years.

We need to hit on draft picks beyond the lottery picks. That's how we'll achieve it.

Let's say Slaf becomes a perennial 20g20a guy (or in that ball park), that's a decent pick. But we absolutely need at least one of Mesar/Beck/Hutson to be an NHL regular or even a top-4 D / top-6 forward.

If you go back 10-12 years, let's say until 2010, with the exception of MacCarron, Juulsen & Scherbak, all of our first round picks have ended up as NHL regulars with varying levels of success. We'll see how long Poehling lasts, but the point remains. So, checkmark there.

Problem is, however, beyond those first round picks, we have almost nothing to show for it.

We got Gallagher in 2010, Lehkonen in 2012, Evans in 2014, Mete (for now) & Pezzetta in 2016, Romanov in 2018. That's it. Those are the only non-first round NHLers we've drafted in twelve years. It is nearly impossible to win that way. So one top-6 forward, one third line checking forward, one fourth line center, one 7th/8th D, one guy who played games in the NHL by virtue of being on the worst team in the league and one top-4 d-man. That ain't great.

Outside of Farrell & Roy, I don't have much hope for anyone else we've drafted from 2019 to 2021. We really need to start hitting on our extra picks that we trade for, otherwise this shit is going to keep going over & over again.

Leafs choked vs Blue Jackets and Habs

but last year they lost to an elite team (in the first round) by a whisker

kind of lazy to lump all their previous first round losses together -- they are as good of a Stanley Cup threat as anyone this year

Harris in 2018 as well. Still a lot of maybes from 2019-2021 but I agree with your assessment as the two most likely prospects from those drafts to make it.

Until they win one round they don't get the benefit of the doubt. They haven't been able to either beat easy or tough matchups or pull upsets. And they have consistently let their feet off the gas as soon as they take a lead in the series.

sure...you can aptly call them chokers -- but chokers are chokers until they aren't, just like teams have momentum until they lose it.

trends don't last forever

question: would you pick the Leafs as your first round opponent this year (because of their past)?

I’ll be very happy if we can get to the Leafs current talent level in a few years. Why they can’t win in the playoffs are things we probably can’t fully grasp but that doesn’t have to be the case here too. The Avs and Bolts haven’t had those issues.

Depends on the alternative but in general, absolutely. The weight of their past is a powerful factor for their opponent. Of all current playoff teams, I would definitely pick the Leafs if I had the choice.

Any statistical regression should include past performance variables. Until the Leafs prove they're more than a regular season dog & pony show they'll remain playoff contenders, not cup contenders. That's their lot in life of their own making.

In the past 10 years only two presidents trophy winners went on to win the cup, Washington in 2017 and Chicago in 2013. Being good on paper in regular session means shit if you consistently lose post season.

I just want a team that can beat any other team consistently. You'll have your down nights but playing a high tempo structured game like the lightning and Bruins would be nice for awhile.
Bruins have had a solid run for over a decade , thats what the Habs should be

Only 1 Cup tho....BOO!!!!

seriously, this is the way. Build a stable, talented team and hope to catch lightning in a bottle come playoff time

so glad Bruins screwed up their 2015 draft (3 first rounders) and passed on Barzal/Connor/Chabot

That draft could off set them up for another cup , but their decade long success is impressive
