Habs were in a conundrum, it's pretty hard to move away from Price in his prime, but the rest of the team was seriously lacking.

I like how clairvoyant you are but when he signed he was just coming off playing 62 games and finishing 3rd for the Vezina. And he had one minor injury in the next 3 seasons after signing.
He already had hip and knee issues before that
There were reports after his injury filled season in 2015 season his knee and hips were problematic
I remember a medical expert mentioning Price was not going to have a long career after that year
So mysteriously a few short years after signing his moronic deal he falls apart again , basically playing zilch for 5 years
How much more of a red flag do you need to see

Obviously you and I have no idea what was the condition of his knee at the time, but if there was legit concerns about his knees, and they have a full team of doctors to figure it out, and yet they still signed him to a 8 years contract then they're idiots. But I have a hard time believing they did this without consulting with the medical team.

That being said, I would have waited until the end of his contract to resign him instead of signing him with a year left. Same mistake they did with Gally.
after getting to semi finals in 2014 and QF in 2015, there was no reason to ditch the team after 2016. It appeared to be just an off year. Bergevin blew it at the 2017 deadline when we were a top team and he did nothing.
Fixed , I remember the surgeon was mentioning what he tore or stress to that tissue was going to be arthritic and surgery couldnt fix it at some point
No issue having a normal life just not the stress of a pro goalie

Should’ve traded Galchenyuk pick for Ryan Johanssen - not the ideal panacea but he’d have helped for a few seasons

2017 would have been a good year to retool honestly.
Ok we traded Subban for Weber already but now you still have Weber to trade. And Price with a year left on his contract. Plekanec still has value. Max just come off a 35 goals season (and was going to be traded next summer anyway). Probably a good time to move Galchenyuk as well.
tell me, in what world does a team that finished first in the east decide to gut the team?

Offseason was awful and injuries to Price and Weber (only 26 games) didn't help. Had MB not messed up the 2017 summer (or development overall), we might have made the playoffs a few more times.
We rebounded the season after with 96 points but still missed the playoffs due to our horrendous PP. 5 on 5 we were one of the best team in the league that year. Then we had the 2 pandemic seasons and that was it.
Yup , unfortunately too many boxes didnt check right to steer the ship better
Thats why its imperative to not fuck around with this rebuild , do it right no short cuts
