GDT | Game 56 | VS Sabres | Wednesday, February 21 | 7:00PM EST

There is always a chance that Huston & Engstrom (and Trudeau, and the Russian) flops. Even with this, there is also Matheson whose only 29 years old (turning 30 this month). Can't keep everyone. One of them might have more value to this team as trade bait.
I don’t see Matheson being re-upped, the question IMO is when will he be flipped, can HuGo maximize return & what exactly is maximizing return on a 30-year old top-4D who playing out of position on 1st pair and will a contender overlook his defensive warts given his offensive production + digestible AAV even w 2-years term remaining

Guhle's only overrated by those here who foolishly told me for years he had offensive potential.

However, if you want to tell me Guhle's a #3-4 and a steady partner for an offense-first RHD (Lane Hutson if he were right handed instead, for example) then I think that would be fair.

That said, if I was able to get a top-6 forward at around the same age as him? I'd trade him tomorrow.
I always felt McDonagh was a good comparison, about 30-40 points range, but more toward 30s.

Agreed - there’s more than “just a chance” they flop

I don't know. Or you can also re-up Matheson and flip one of your young D for a similarly young top 6 forward. Matheson looks like he can play another 8 years.

I think he can get to 25-30ish regularly, especially on bad teams where he gets a lot of ice time. But if he's on a good team? I strongly doubt he'll ever get enough opportunities to go beyond that.

The other issue with Guhle: He's got a lot of notable injuries for a player his age. Always something that worries me.

As a top 4, he's going to get plenty of ice time. He's already producing at that rate on a poor offensive team with no PP time. He's only averaging about 20-21 minutes per game, I don't see his ice time going down significantly from that.

Injuries is indeed a concern.

What we are is a bad team that still has too much deadwood to get rid of before it can start dreaming about being a playoff team. We are a team that isn't done suffering yet. More tanking is needed.
you need to realize this "tanking" you keep preaching will be nothing but a 7 year blue ball session and at the end of the day, we won't win and you will be 65 before we make the playoffs again.

So you’d trade him for Zegras? I would send him and the Jets pick, but not ours.

Would you do Guhle and Peg`s first for Zegras ?

Good post , need to pounce in the summer on a deal like this in the summer ...value will never be higher with a beauty cap number

Matheson is more valuable than the Petry we traded...so I'd expect quite a bit for him

Trading him this summer would probably be optimal in terms of return

I don't think I would do Guhle for Zegras straight up, let alone Guhle+.

Before this season, I would have done it. 100%.

However, there seems to be a reoccurring pattern with Zegras that worries me. It also worries me that a team in the middle of their rebuild is openly looking to trade a 22 year old 60 point center when they could have best 1-2-3 punch in the NHL in three years.

A trade based around Guhle for Zegras gives me too many flashbacks of Sergachev for Drouin, not that I think Guhle's going to be as good as Sergachev's turned out. But the young player that has issues (maturity?) with his team and they're going to trade him, it's just a matter of time?
