GDT Game 82: VS Bruins, Thursday, April 13, 7PM EST (THIS IS THE END!)

Molson stated on Mitch Melnick’s show, a plan had been set in place after the 1st round loss to NYR in the playoffs and a clear need for more offense. Habs had allotted a specific amount of $ for re-signing Radulov & Markov, Drouin was supposed to be an addition to the top-6 as a W not a C, and Alzner was supposed to be Emelin’s replacement at similar cap hit.

Org hadn’t banked on Radulov refusing the offer and Markov being adamant on a 3-year deal finally deciding to get it in KHL, and had to shuffle the last minute for those brilliant moves…
It's always wise to have a Plan B and Plan C just in case . . . Oh well.

Their handling of Markov was pure incompetence.
Habs gave him a 2-Year offer no other NHL would even do, but Markov was adamant about a 3-year deal. When he realized how much the KHL sucked he came back groveling for that 2-year deal but NHL season had already started.

Lidstrom re-upped on 1-Year bonus deals for a number of years before retiring, Bergeron & Krejci have done the same w Bruins, many other long time players have opted for that pathway, but Markov refused … f*ck the gimp

I thought offers to both Markov and Rsdulov were fair at the time. MB gets criticized for giving too big contracts but also for not caving on others. Can’t win.

Exactly , buy I would of traded him to the Kings when that good deal was offered

Like Gee said, Drouin’s value was never higher than on draft day, his value constantly eroded and Yzerman was able to capture 70cents on the dollar by trading him to a team desperate for a franco star centre wannabee

The problem was trying to go half in. It you trade your best prospect you better be going all in.

Of course it was obvious from the start that Alzner was a waste of cap space. Maybe use that for Markov and radulov....

There was never a cohesive plan with MB. All moves were reactionary and mostly in isolation. If there was a plan, he would have traded for a center, not for a winger still developing and try to convert it to center out of necessity.

Sounds right.

I still say he was pretty good at trades
... In isolation. Drouin was the big miss.

His main issue was the lack of drafting and developing.

I always felt there was a basic incoherence to the strategy. We had an all world goalie and a semi decent core back in 2014ish, yet they insisted on “building through the draft”. Even if the picks had worked out, they just weren’t aligned in terms of age, it didn’t square. If they were to keep a core based on Price, with Subban or Weber, they should have traded a couple of picks for immediate help.

Instead, we got a roster that couldn’t possibly support Price and a buncha shitty draft picks.

2016 the rebuild should of started in stages

Pissed away 3 more Suzuki deals hanging on Price , Gally , Petry

We did a weird whiplash though. We finished 3rd last in the league when they got hired so building through the draft was reasonable but then we finished 4th in the league the next year, the went to the semifinals then 2nd in the league. Those 3 years were our window somehow and we were still saddled with bad contracts from Gauthier. He should have been more aggressive in hindsight, especially with the 2013 draft when they had many picks.
