I still do have concerns about Marner's raw tools - shot, speed, size - that may stop him from being elite.
Yup. It is a very very very legit concern. He won't be a complete bust but it's entirely realistic that he isn't elite - in fact I'd probably bet on that at this point. He's simply not quick or especially fast enough and his shot is simply not good enough. A lot of his potential comes from his offensive IQ and vision, and I don't like relying on that too much when it comes to elite prospects. His raw tools aren't nearly as impressive as you guys believe. He's exceptionally average in almost all areas.
With that said, he thinks the game at such a high level that he'll eventually figure it out and become a quality NHL player. I just don't quite see the raw tools that you guys see.
...
Well he has vision and high hockey IQ. I just mean his raw tools. He doesn't have enough there. The advantage of him feasting on mediocre OHLers will be gone. He worked that to perfection. He figured out a way to take a fat shit on the weak talent without having elite raw tools. It was an impressive thing but there is no guarantee he can do that in the NHL too. That's asking a lot.

When I say Sam Gagner, I'm not saying he'll be another Sam Gagner. Which wouldn't be the worst thing in the world - he's a solid possession player and criminally undervalued. I'm just saying that's his floor. They have comparable skillsets. The major difference is Marner was the main driver on his OHL line, Gagner wasn't. However, the comparison is an excellent one on all facets - ignoring the OHL numbers, they have nearly identical raw tools. I'd bet money on him being better than Gagner only because of the rarity of a player with those numbers is only becoming as good as Gagner, but I worst case scenario he's another Gagner. He will likely be anywhere from a good 2nd liner to a 1st liner with an outside chance at elite though.
I just want to make sure you people have realistic expectations. Don't set yourselves up for disappointment by already calling him a future "all time Leaf great." It's a bit much, really.
