GDT - Return of Reim Take 2

number17

Mod Squad
The Panthers are in town again and Reim will indeed start tonight's game. We beat them 3-2 in late October. Reim has posted a .905 SV% so far this year with the Panthers, which isn't all that good ... lets hope he doesn't use game against his former team as a stepping stone to get back on track tonight.

We are coming off a big win over the Preds, and against a winnable team it's good if we can build some momentum and string together a few wins. We won 3 in a row in early November, but other than that the buds have not won 2 games in a row all season long. It will be good if we get another W before the big game vs. the East leading Habs on Sat.

Go Leafs Go!!!

Can we please, please see Hyman flipped out for Sosh, or at least Komarov??

There is honestly nothing more frustrating during these games than watching a Prius try to keep up with two Ferraris.

Are we sure we want to trade JVR? We're pretty good in terms of wing prospects but the only one I'd say is probably ready next year is Kapanen...

Leipsic? Don't think he will be a top 6 winger but a 3rd line winger next season isn't out of reach.

Such a tough call. But I'd have to keep him if the price is right.

Bozak has to go, no question. But JVR is still young, producing better than ever, has size, speed, and skill, and seems to like being a Leaf. If he's down for a Rielly/Kadri type of deal, we should sign him. Though I think the floor would be $5.75m.

Adding to this is the fact that Brown, Hyman, and Komarov all seem to be third liners without much pop, Sosh is a wildcard, and Kapanen is unknown. JVR is the one true scoring winger aside from Marner and Nylander, the latter of whom is likely going to play center eventually.

I would definitely trade JVR for a bluechip young piece before he hits UFA.

There's a price for everything, so it really depends on who we could get.

I wouldn't trade him for just a good young dman. It'd have to be for a Lindholm type at minimum.

And if not, then we're better off keeping him.

We don't really have a choice. I am not signing JVR to a Phaneuf contract, and I am also not letting him walk for nothing.

They are definitely a worse team without JVR, but there is a cap.

If you could get him for 3-4 years and what he is making now fine, but barring a completely unrealistic hometown discount the value just isn't there given who we will have to sign over the next 8 years.

If he was signed for 3-4 more seasons at his present salary, I would be very happy to keep him. He's a very nice complementary piece to have with the new core we're assembling, and big wingers that can regularly score 30 goals & 60 points don't grow on trees.

But, unfortunately, we burned up all his underpaid seasons while we were a shit-show of a team, and now he's UFA after next season. So, do you really want us to be the team that gives him his Kyle Okposo/Milan Lucic/Andrew Ladd-esque 7-year/$40-45M contract?

And if you don't, you kind of have to trade him either this season or in the off-season, or his value's just going to keep going down.

Yeah, he's a possibility but doesn't replace JVR as you said.

I understand what you are saying but to me it comes down to if we want to pay the man long term. A year and a half left on a very cap friendly contract is the perfect time to maximize value if dealing him.

Does it have to necessarily be a defenseman coming back for him?

another bluechip young D piece is probably the biggest need, assuming that we don't want to spend more assets on goaltending.

I'm not sure we'd get a bluechip anything for JVR at this point. He is 27 with one year left on his deal. JVR is a short term add for a team. St Louis has had a tough time getting that kind of talent for Shattenkirk. I'm sure you could get a guy like Shattenkirk or Fowler, but thats just puts us in the same position.

We are likely looking at picks and prospects.

I don't think he'd stay that long even if he was signed for the same money. Babcock said(in the practice few days ago..i remember him saying something similar before) that he thinks JVR is good but could be a lot better because they're trying to teach him to play more of a cycle game(he said he's primarily a rush guy..basically what some of us have been saying about JVR for awhile). This to me is a sign that if a right deal comes along they'd get rid of someone like JVR for more muscle on that first line(even if it comes down to 5 or so goals less).
