GDT: Round 1, Game 2 Canes v. Devils 4/22 6:00

Also. After looking at the replay I hope the league doesn’t suspend Burns for that head butt. I guess that might get us some Nikishin……or Morrow

I missed it in the arena, but rewatched part of the broadcast and saw it. It was helmet to helmet and no big deal - but what an Oscar-winning performance by Timo Meier, who started it and deserved a lot more. He's been doing this crap in both games this series.

Can any of you unpack the Haula hate? I know he scored a ton of goals to start. Got hurt maybe. Heard locker room cancer then traded but don't know anything specific.

Short version. Fans loved him here, when his wife miscarried there was a ton of support form the fans. Then it came out there were locker room issues (emotions were high so that makes sense), and his wife was bad mouthing the area. After he shipped out that continued a bit, and it was blown way out of proportion. Then he posted to social media wearing a "Canes suck" bracelet a fan had made him, and the Caniacs jumped on it. I'd say the actual hate for him is like 90% in jest; it's hard to really hate a guy who is irrelevant when he plays against you; what is he 0-19 or 1-19 in Raleigh since being traded?

Burns has played better than he has been these 2 games, but he's still not good. He and Orlov seem to be in a "who can screw this up best" contest. If the Canes can take game 3, I'd like to see Nikishin in game 4 to get him in a game in case he's needed later.

And the next question is does RBA ever put Koochie in to see where his heads at and if he can do anything, or just continue to trot Freddie out every game and wear him out if we go another round? Kind of a no win situation either way with the way Kooch finished the season

In two games the Canes have 1 even strength goal from a forward (Stanky) and zero non-EN goals from the top 2 lines. Do I have that right? I’m no believer in the “top 2 lines cancel and depth scoring wins” adage but if ever there was a case to make that point ….

Rod should consider dressing 7 D men, and keeping Burns on the bench until it's PP time. He played one 24 second shift in game 82. So he should be fine just playing on the PP for at least one or two games this series.

but why?

Burns has 3 PP points on the year. Let me re-state that, he has 3 PP points in 84 games. Putting him on the PP is malfeasance at this point.

Honestly, I just think he should take him off of the PP and let him concentrate on his 5v5 minutes. His shot has lost sufficient zip that nobody's playing him to do anything other than pass these days, so he's getting nothing done on the PP anyway. Rod's stubborn though ... and that's both a good and a bad thing. Fans get hung up on the bad side of the ledger, because ... they're fans.

Meh ... that's just how this matchup has gone over two games. Aho's line was pretty bad in Game 1, but they were very good in all situations in Game 2 and the other groups have been pretty consistent. And who exactly makes up Carolina's top 2 lines anyway? The top 3 lines get pretty much equal ice time at even strength unless the other team is pushing their 1st line on the road, in which case Staal's line plays more. All those line number shorthands really don't mean much in general, but with a Brind'Amour team they mean even less. And in the playoffs, these things ebb and flow. Just get enough goals to win the game.

For all of his lapses in judgement as of the last few months, Burns 5v5 knows the system better than Nikishin and can contribute, but he shouldn't be anywhere near the PP. As for who fills that role? Literally anyone else on the team that has a sniff of defensive responsibility can replicate Burns' numbers on the PP and not give up a shorty.

It's a good question. IMO, the way Freddie is playing now, you cannot take him out. If he begins to falter, then you go with Kooch and see if his game has improved.

Another question: When will Jankowski get a chance to play? Rosy has looked OK, but not great and I feel that Janky has more upside. Of course, when you're winning it's hard to make changes for changes sake. While the Devils played well last night, they're close to the Walking Dead with all of their injuries and we'll need more firepower if we face any other team. It would be nice to see more success from our top line (looking at you, Aho) and I think our 4th line could use a boost, too.

Short version ...

Haula came in to be Carolina's 2nd line center in 2019 and got off to a hot start, which caused a segment of the fan base to fall hard for the guy. He's an aggressively annoying guy, and Canes fans like that. Sadly, he's also an egomaniac and he started to think he deserved more ice time and more PP opportunities than he was getting, which went over exactly as well with Brind'Amour as you'd think. Haula also caused issues in the locker room because of his attitude towards Brind'Amour. Then he got hurt, missed some time and his hot start fizzled and he was more trouble than he was worth ... same as he had been in Minnesota and Vegas before he landed in Raleigh. So they packaged him up in a deal for Trocheck ... who was exactly the same kind of player except he bought into the systems and what playing for Rod entails. Haula then proceeded to act like an ass every time one of his teams played the Canes ... cheap shots, generally mouthiness, that kind of thing. The fans responded with boos and he's turned into sort of a lingering folk anti-hero for some reason.

Shorter version ... the guy's a gigantic a-hole and no fan of any team he's ever played for likes him. We just like him less because he took shots at our popular coach while he was here.
