You need some able bodies to feed the big club and help with cheap ELC`s
I realize the Habs couldnt draft for shit but its much better now
You cant move every first rounder unless its for a Dach type deal and the pick up
No interest in trading for ok meh players with no upside

You could fill your farm club with decent minimum salaries, the Belizle, Richard, Ouellet of this world, which often are better call up than young guys on an ELC still trying to figure out the pro game.
Not interested in trading for meh players with no upside either. But trading picks for 20-22 years old with upside and already NHL experience is not a terrible proposition. Sometimes it will backfire, other times it will work beautifully but at least we won't come up empty handed. What if you can add on average 2 21 talented years old to your roster every year?

At the very worst, a solid depth player at reasonable cap hit. The risk is almost all upside.
Bobby Smith was an excellent 15 for the Habs.

Obviously you don't trade all your picks but I like the balanced approach. I still would have liked to keep one of the pick traded for Newhook. Our draft really suffered in part because of it.
With this contract, I feel a lot better about the trade. It's now a very good move.
