Habs News & Notes: Training Camp 2015

Yawn...nothing really new to get excited about this year, other than Petry will be with the team for a full year. Pleks and Markov are a year older and thats not good considering how much the team relies on these two. But thats what you get with the salary cap...Habs should be a team going for broke to get over the hump, but the cap kills the possibility.

All of them kiss ass, though. Even Bob McKenzie, the top dog when it comes to hockey info.

Remember when Colin Campbell's emails were revealed & deciphered by mc79hockey to show that he went after refs that were hard towards his son Greg Campbell? Bob had to write a piece to defend Colin on TSN because he needs his sources. That article killed all expectations from me of ever seeing any journalistic integrity in anything he ever wrote.

It's also one of the reasons I love listen to Pierre McGuire, minus his drivel on analytics because he doesn't believe in them at all, he doesn't care as much about being critical towards players/management. But even then, he'll never go hard on*people like Lou Lamiorello despite being terrible at his job since the 04-05 lockout.

Yeah they all do it to maintain their sources but I've heard McKenzie and Dreger at least slam a few players who aren't performing well while LeBrun takes the high road every single time.

Not that I blame him much but he apparently did not like the role he was given on HNIC for a year during the 2nd intermission Hot Stove segment where he refused to get into a discussion on any of the topics he brought up that were challenged by the rest of the guys on the desk.

I remember McKenzie defending Campbell and you knew it was a protecting a source type of intervention. It also made me laugh when Campbell was one of the first guests on TSN's radio launch in Toronto where James Cybulski went after him for some of his recent suspension decisions and Campbell said... "Oh... is the kind of show this is going to be, eh?"

I mean Cybulski was terrible and obvioulsy wanted to act like he was a 60-Minutes reporter but you sure could tell that Campbell didn't like going off script.

McKenzie & Dreger "slam" players, but outside of saying "x player needs to step up and play better" or some variant of that, they rarely say more than that.

I don't blame Lebrun for being displeased at CBC. Just look at Friedman, guy's the only guy worth listening to on the whole Sportsnet crew yet he's put on a panel with PJ Stock and two other dopes that would be better off fingering their *******s than being hockey commentators. He almost looks defeated. I wish Friedman was on TSN, especially during the years when TSN had the TV rights.

McKenzie has the right tone with everything he does and Dreger seems to have kept most of his sources despite saying how it is during the Insiders segments. You don't need to beat down players like many media guys in print seem to do with their columns but LeBrun just acts like he lives in a world of puppies and kittens.

As for Friedman I said it several times last year on this board how disgusted I was with the way he is treated like the fat kid in school being hazed every night by the collection of idiots at the desk. Stock is simply a moron we've all seen too much of on TV already but I was didn't think in year one of working with Elliotte that Kypreos would act like he was best bud's with the guy so that gives him the right to put him down during each telecast as if he is pulling wedgies in school with his other buddies.

Sportsnet and Rogers are as terrible as we all figured they would be. I haven't heard of any changes this year so I guess they all got rubber-stamped to continue their buffoonery. Plus I am already tired of all the Leafs stories in the media and camp hasn't even opened. Someone should clock Sportsnet to see how much time they spend on the Leafs and McDavid segments this fall although it might be easier to clock everything else.

I wouldnt worry about Friedman, he can handle himself. When he insists, he can get the last word in.

Going through tape from yesterday, I asked Max Pacioretty to describe the value of Tomas Plekanec. Here's his answer:

Аrpon Basu:
Both Pacioretty and Gallagher said Galchenyuk "has always wanted" to play C. Last season's "more comfortable on the wing" stuff was bogus.

A dose of reality for GW and Donnie.

I always said that the reporting that Galchenyuk approached MT to tell him that he was more comfortable on the wing was false as it was actually reported by others from the start that Therrien approached AG to ask him if he would be open to go back on the wing. They made a bit deal of demystifying something that never was actually reported as such. That was my issue with it. I never believed that AG approached MT because it was actually reported the day it came out that the opposite happened.

It does but if they don't want to extend 14 then it's better to get something for him.

It all depends on your expectations for this season.

Most posters want the habs to go for the cup right now. This year.

Trading 14 to get something because he might walk will weaken us.

A UFA to be Plekanec will not give us a player that will be more useful than him to this team.

If Bergevin does not plan to extend Plekanec and wants to go for the cup, another option would be to swap Plekanec with another UFA to be of equal value and try to sign back the said player before he becomes UFA next summer.

A Plekanec-Backes swap becomes an interesting idea, if you are ready to take the risk that Backes might leave for nothing next summer.

Fetching draft picks for a UFA to be is ok, but risking to lose a player for nothing to go for the cup right now is not a bad option IMO.

Then again, would you rather have Backes or Plekanec on that team, and do you think this year could be the year ?

IMO Backes brings more to "this" Habs team, than does Plekanec, simply due to versatility, not shy to use big body element, can play W or C, without weakening the team on the defensive responsibility front - since Backes is no slouch in that area, and the Habs would be getting a younger asset (by nearly 2-yrs)

UFA to be tradeoff - not as if a longterm asset is being swapped...
