Habs News & Notes: Training Camp 2015

IMO Backes brings more to "this" Habs team, than does Plekanec, simply due to versatility, not shy to use big body element, can play W or C, without weakening the team on the defensive responsibility front - since Backes is no slouch in that area, and the Habs would be getting a younger asset (by nearly 2-yrs)

UFA to be tradeoff - not as if a longterm asset is being swapped...

They wont move DB for 14 , the pressure is on us with 14 .

3-4 years at 5.5-6 mil and hope his skills dont diminish or move him and get something .

This is how it went down earlier this summer according to Rolex

Bergevin hands Chuckie his contract.

Chuckie puts on his best poker face and asks nonchalantly "Am I playing centre this year?"

Bergevin shrugs "MT doesn't think you're ready yet"

Chuckie seems relieved. He signs the contract.

Bergevin erupts into a big smile "But I think you're ready. And I'm the boss. See you in September, sucker"

Why do we need to get something for him? If you can't get anything other than draft picks at the deadline you're better off keeping him for the playoffs and risk letting him walk on July 1st. If he does then the cap space he frees up becomes, in essence, the "asset" coming the other way.

For all we know, MB probably tried to get a center this summer and failed thus reverting to Galchenyuk as a 2nd option.

Lot of scenarios possible, but I think the "MB is stupid/trickster theory and finally saw the light" is the most naive one. People here are just desperate for a # 1 centre.

Fleischmann's a nice warm body to have. I don't think this team needs another floater, though.

Worth a tryout. We lack for offense, and now have 2 wildcards in Semin and Fleischmann to hopefully be solid top-6 options

yep, if we face an Ovechkin or Crosby in the playoffs, Plekanec will have great value as second centre.

I'd rather more grit on the fourth line. For less than a mil I'd probably sign him for injury replacement, he does have top six talent but man does be ever make Plekanec look like Lucic.

It all depends on your expectations for this season.

Most posters want the habs to go for the cup right now. This year.

Trading 14 to get something because he might walk will weaken us.

A UFA to be Plekanec will not give us a player that will be more useful than him to this team.

If Bergevin does not plan to extend Plekanec and wants to go for the cup, another option would be to swap Plekanec with another UFA to be of equal value and try to sign back the said player before he becomes UFA next summer.

A Plekanec-Backes swap becomes an interesting idea, if you are ready to take the risk that Backes might leave for nothing next summer.

Fetching draft picks for a UFA to be is ok, but risking to lose a player for nothing to go for the cup right now is not a bad option IMO.

Then again, would you rather have Backes or Plekanec on that team, and do you think this year could be the year ?

14 is a non-factor in the playoffs usually. I don't think his non-presence would have any impact on our chances to win the Cup as we have a lot of centers.

the pressure is on MB to improve this team so we can win, if moving Plek, or whomever does that then you do it.. we are not winning the cup unless there is a change at centre... either DD or Plek has to move .. Chuckie at center is a start, and if he pans out, we have a log jam at center... This is Plek's last year as a hab

Yeah... that is really dumb. I'm astounded at some of the stupidity spewed around here in regards to Plekanec.
