Habs News & Notes: Training Camp 2015

Reality is Therrien will use Pleks in most key situations on the ice this season. So he is the de facto # 1 centre. It is what it is.
 
So I guess you want to re-sign 14 for another five years because that's he'll want, and will probably get from some team. I think I'll pass on that. 27 is better offensively and 81 is fine defensively. The team will survive the loss of 14.

Survive? Of course.... get better? No.
 
I have a better idea.

Keep Pleks and get rid of Lars "Playoff Warrior" Eller who doesn't do a single thing better than Pleks. The only thing he has on Pleks is his size.

Sounds smart given that 14 is almost mid-30's and 81 is 26. Very smart.

Hey... maybe we can get an 18 year old capable of 3g and 12 points... that's even better!!!

Eller is younger than Pleks, but Plekanec is a vastly superior in every facet of the game. It's not even remotely close.

Except that's not the case. Eller has much better possession stats, etc.
 
Habs are better with Plekanec than without. The numbers don't lie. It's really ridiculous to state otherwise. Now if he was traded for a better player then the Habs would be better without him.

He wouldn't be leaving for nothing. His departure would free up $5 million worth of cap space that they can use to sign a better player.

Pierre LeBrun was on the radio this past week and he explained it. In the pre-cap NHL it was a cardinal sin to let a guy walk at the end of his contract but the way things work today it's not that big a deal because the cap space created by the departure of a player is as valuable an asset as a warm body or a draft pick.

In the case of the Habs, they should be trying to win a Cup this year, not playing it safe and stockpiling picks and prospects. neither of those types of assets can help them win now. So if they're going to trade Pleks they need to get an immediate upgrade on him or it's not worth doing. If we get to the trade deadline and the only thing anyone offers for Pleks are picks and prospects the Habs are better off keeping him and letting him play out the contract. Then at least they have him for the playoff run. If he walks on July 1st just use the cap space to sign a better UFA.

How about 3 years? What a concept!!!! Wow!!!

I wouldn't necessarily be opposed to 5 years at like $5M either though. He's shown no signs of slowing down yet. He's 32, I see no reason why he couldn't still be quite good for the majority if not all of that contract.

Another team will offer him 5 years so he has no reason to accept u'r 3 year offer.
