Habs News & Notes: Training Camp 2015

He doesn't have to be 6'5", 220lbs but could he at least be NORMAL, AVERAGE SIZE??? I could live with 5'11", 190lbs.

5'7", 153lbs is small even for women's hockey, ffs!

Between a useless pylon and him, they choose him. I'm all for big guys, but I'd rather have a gallagher than a De La Rose who does shit on the ice. Size is not everything in hockey as some of you believe.

Flynn is a useless player on this team. Byron is one of the quickest guys in the league and can cause some chaos on the forecheck while Flynn brings nothing in any category to the table.

Flynn's best asset is that he can be a 13th forward and sit in the press boxes for an extended period of time without complaining one bit...and if needed can skate on a fourth line in the NHL without hurting you

Basically he's the Mike Weaver of forwards

Try and sit a Brandon Prust or Dale Weise in a press box for five games and by game three they'll be bitching to anyone willing to listen.

That's the beauty of guys like Flynn and that's the onky reason they're in the NHL...they won't cause a stir and disrupt the team

I would have found a way to get Magnus Parjarvi Svensson out of St Louis over Byron, but whatever.

agreed 100% , nothing against Byron but if he was a dynamic offensive player like Johnny G thats fine but a gap filler on the bottom 6 , rather play JDL

That POS outplayed many of our forwards in the playoffs.

I'd rather not put a 20 year old on the fourth line for 5 minutes of ice time a night, plus maybe 2-3 minutes of penalty kill. I'd rather see if he can develop some offence playing 15-20 in St. John's.

JDL is a defensive minded bottom 6 player who played well last year , he can get his training with the big club and develop the same way . In the minors he will be playing with rejects on bottom lines.

He has size , decent wheels , and can play the boards and in time he might develop some offensive ability while he might be one of our top defensive players some day. He made some solid defensive plays last year showing his smarts well beyond what a 19 year old displays.

No disrespect for Byron but would rather give JDL his shot now and insert some size and youth in this lineup . Neither will light it up on the bottom 6 but least at least the 20 year old is part of our future moving forward.

This isnt Sven trying to land a job , where has no role , JDL is tailored made for a bottom 6 role , a Kruger type that all teams could use.

That's a disengenous argument. It wasn't as if Byron was the only option out there. The last thing this team needs, especially on the bottom six, is an undersized player. It needs players who can lean on opponents.

Agreed , look at the Kassian gamble regardless of outcome as an example . Prust is done , Zach has way more upside hence the deal plus cap savings to boot. Couldnt care less a 5th rounder for a washed up Prust just like Moen before him moved a useless body.

If both midget Byron and JDL are gonna be in tough to produce on the bottom 6 would rather keep the guy as you say can lean on opponents , plus he can kill penalties and provide some size.

If he was such a great analytics player WTF is Calgary letting him go and he makes peanuts?

Burke has his fingerprints all over this team, he likes big and slow like Colborne.

Some would have said the exact same things about Max Pacioretty circa 2010. He was a good possession player and good defensively with very little points to show for it in 2008-09 and 2009-10.

There is something to be said about being allowed to play the PP in the AHL, something he won't do here. Getting top line minutes and top zone starts. Learning how to use his size infront of the net. Being able to cheat a bit offensively cause he isn't so 100% focused on playing defensively (cause you have to be at that age or vets will take advantage and burn you in the NHL).... etc....

He's scored some points at the World Junior level, I'd like to see if he can do that in the AHL.

Don't get me wrong, I don't expect him to become Max, but he could become a second liner, and I think this is a better way to develop his offense than to play 5 minutes of ES per night with Torrey Mitchell and Bryan Flynn.

Exactly... it should shock no one that the team that Brian Burke is the president of chooses big players over small ones with better analytics in their bottom six.

Did we not watch the Leafs do exactly that for about 5 years? Putting the Colton Orrs of the world ahead of guys who were far better hockey players and went on to better results with other teams

In the end the kids have only themselves to blame, there was 2 forward spots available and it went to Fleischmann and Byron. It would have been nice for some of our kids to make it harder on management.
