Really? How many Cup runs in his career has he been a key cog in? The answer rhymes with hero.
 
I would be okay with trading Pleks for two reasons;

1- We can trade him & get a good young player in return who could be as good as Pleks one day, not necessarily someone who plays the same position. Seeing as I don't believe this team is close to winning a championship, I'm okay with that.

2- Management doesn't believe they can re-sign him. If management wants to give him 3 years max and he wants 5, or we're offering $5.5M and he wants $6.5M+, then you have to trade him. You can get a very good return for Pleks, especially if you trade him early in the year. You can't let him walk for nothing.

I would look at dealing MaxPac next summer, peak value.

Theres a reason businesses target 50+ age bracket employees in the workforce for elimination. There's a delusional belief in society that majority of human life has intrinsic value, when in reality less than 2% of human society has any performance based value whatsoever. From a micro perspective no difference in the NHL or any other league or profession. It just so happens 30+ yr olds in hockey are the 50+ age braket workforce.

So we agree, more or less, except I would take a draft pick at the deadline too if need be.

The kid is mid-20's so no, he won't really get it. Needs more life experience. It's virtually impossible to upgrade jobs in corporate world after you turn 50.

I wouldn't be opposed to that, but... You need to get a humongous return. MaxPac currently has the best (excluding ELCs) contract in the NHL and the returns need to be eye popping.

But it's all a moot point if they name Pacioretty the captain. If they name him the captain, they might as well add a complete NTC in his contract because there's no way they'll trade him.

Exactly , totally agreed and convinced MB by now knows his direction to proceed. I say 70/30 he is gone at some point ,some desperate GM may offer the right young player to work with.

Convinced a team like the Isles my want to enter their new digs with a splash at some point and move parts of their youth corps for a cup run while JT is cheap. Sal made a great point , you need to be careful when negotiating with Kopitar/Max types at 29 when 8 year mass extensions are involved, as you know you bad money will smack you at some point.

Like you said it needs to be a hell of an offer.

You're being silly in your analogies here.

The truth is that Plekanec would likely be the best player in whatever trade is made for him. I'd rather resign him for 5 years than get scrap.
