Habs Season Thread: 2024-25 Regular Season

Cap space is not a problem next year Drouin/Monahan/Byron clears 15 million.

Plenty of space to absorb another Monahan (or two)

I also think they trade Eddie this summer.

Yup about right if our kids develop , need 5 of our top 20 at least to close to their ceiling

This is good because it seems the cap won’t increase substantially next year… so cap space is a valuable commodity and they can be a broker or take on an expiring turd. The season following… perhaps not so much.

I can see the argument both ways, take the hit next year, maybe flip him at the deadline and have a clean slate in 24-25 or find a better use for the 3.3M next year, maybe get an asset for another bad contract like Monahan and absorb the 1.6M hit in 24-25. Really depends on how much value Hughes can squeeze out of that extra cap space.

Yeah, I meant 24-25. But yeah, I'd rather retain salary next year and get a 3rd for him... or a 6th... better than a cap hit in 24-25.
 
Hughes knows how big the taxes are for free agent interest, he banks that cap space until they’re ready to add, brokering deals and such then when the cap increases he’s going to have plenty to add when team is ready and they can really swing for it

Hughes quote in reference to TBay / Bruins not 2-3 years from making playoffs…

“you’ve got a group of teams that have been there, the Tampas of the world, the Bruins of the world, that all the teams that are coming up are going to have to push out. So I kind of look at it less from “when will we be there?” but more what we need to do before we feel that we have that kind of team. Listen, I think it’s going to be another two, three years … but again, we’re hopeful we have opportunities to trade for good, young players like a Kirby Dach, instead of using a draft pick for it.”

The last bolded part surely screams PLD using Fla pick

I said playoff regulars (Boston/Tampa) not playoff guests

Habs have a lot of teams to pass before they get there

I’m guessing Mailloux + Fla 1st + one of the forward prospects.

I can see Jets retooling on the fly with NHL ready ELC talent and building around Connor & Morrisey

Draft the big Austrian D man and trade for PLD?
Sell Eddie Baby for what you can get then play the kids!
That would speed things up considerably.
