Habs Season Thread: 2024-25 Regular Season

nally , a logical post on this

The whole team is made up of maybe , could be future players
Are you daft? That's precisely what you propose doing when you constantly want to trade players.

Seriously hard to follow you sometimes.

Looking at it objectively, what do we need to be a contender?

#1 Center? Yup.
#2 Center? Nope, Nick Suzuki
Top line wingers? Caufield's the only one in the whole system.
Top-6 wingers? Caufield, hopefully Slafkovski, maybe Farrell. Maybe Dach if we keep him as a winger. Not sure we have one in the system beyond those four. Roy & Kidney might compete for it, but I think they're more 3rd liners if they make it to the NHL.
#3 Center? Possibly Dach, maybe Beck.

#1 d-man? Yup.
#2 d-man? Maybe Hutson?
#3 d-man? If Guhle can stay healthy, I think that's what he'll end up being. We'll see how Mailloux shapes out to be.
#4 d-man? I think one Mailloux/Harris/Xhekaj will eventually carve out a niche there.

#1 goalie? Yup.

So we don't have a #1 center, don't have a #1 d-man, don't have a #1 goalie, don't have much for top-line wingers, not sure if we have a real #2 d-man for the future.

If acquiring Dubois means hurrying things up, I would rather not. This rebuild is long from being over.
I am a bit more optimistic than you.

But you get an elite centre and everything else becomes easier.

Wingers I'm not all that worried about. Caufield and then a few of Roy, Farrel , kidney, Slaf, plus what we draft this year should pan out.

On D I think there is a chance guhlie/engstrom/hutson become 1 or 2s.

Then we need some of the others to be top 4 guys.

Goalies. Who the fuck knows with them.

The bad part is I see like 4 non rookie players that have a spot going forward. Matheson, caufield, Suzuki, dach.

If PLD was an elite center, I'd be singing a different tune. If PLD were Brayden Point or Sebastien Aho, that's a different scenario entirely. Hell yeah I would give up a package for them.

But PLD & Suzuki are players that would both be slotted around the same place on contending teams and while PLD undoubtedly makes this team better in the immediate, it doesn't help for the long-term future. Acquiring PLD this off-season via trade will keep this team closer to consistent mediocrity like Ottawa. We'll be good enough to maybe make a push for the playoffs, but in reality? Everyone would know deep down, this ain't a real playoff contender.

Stay the course, accumulate picks, draft players and develop them. Take flyers on some former highly regarded players that aren't working out somewhere and hope they figure it out here.

Oh yes. Agreed. I was ignoring the PLD stuff. We need that elite centre or we are back to make the playoffs and pray mode.

WTF are you talking about

I wanted to trade Gally , Price , Petry for the haul we got for Pacioretty on a team going nowhere

Why would I trade good players on on a competitive team

Your seeing the end result of kicking the can down the road , it’s called a full rebuild that never should of happened .

no way Molson accepts that, nor will Hughes simply because he only has a 5 year contract, he wants at least to make the playoffs 2x in his 5 years or else we risk becoming Buffalo

Molson wants to win. I get that. The rest of the teams that have better players don’t give a shit, though.

Signing him for 8M is a completely different proposition than trading a package of picks and prospects for him and then signing him for 8M.

While 8M is an overpay that I can live with, I'm not a fan of trading a bunch a valuable assets for him.

Point being, we have bigger needs than a PLD type player at this point in time. He’s not an elite talent, but he’s a very good player, even if a tad self-entitled.
Add PLD + Hart + top-5 pick from this draft, core surely is starting to get established..
