Habs Season Thread: 2024-25 Regular Season

Pretty garbage trade for SJS for not eating salary. Unless they are tight for money they should have retained salary to get a better package.
Well, technically, they "retained" salary differently: They inherited bad contracts (Granlund, Hoffman, Rutta). Hoffman's contract is ending next summer, while Granlund & Rutta finish theirs in 2025. So they'll be withholding bad contracts for one or two years, instead of having a large chunk of dead money for 4 years.

San Jose did retain a tiny but of Karlsson's contract, but didn't have the space to do a big retention and inherit bad contracts.

Anyways, if we retain 50% of Petry's last 2 years, can we get anything decent for him?
I think so, yeah.

Around $2.5M caphit for a second pairing RHD that can probably still put up some numbers? HP could probably talk about him more, but I don't think he's washed.

If the Habs retain further on Petry, which isn't really likely unless it's a solid asset in return, there would be a line of teams at deadline.

are teams not limited as to how many retained salaries on the payroll?

Yup … that’s why getting rid of all of Hoffman’s useless contract is worthy of Sal pouring a glass for all of us

Grier fucked up royally

How the hell do you trade a Norris winner and first ballot HOF and not get back a legit piece for the future

Pitt traded 2 aging bad contracts , Habs traded junk and SJS gets back nothing but some cap down the road and a maybe draft pick

Sharks should of eaten 4 mil and made a much better hockey trade
Without retaining? That is about all that can be expected. Old guy with a ntc and a rebuilding team that is still signed long term at giant money.

Yeah that was a brutal contract on a great player they didn't need. All in all he did ok.

I think I'd be okay with San Jose's end if they had gotten an extra first or a B+ / A- prospect.

But just a first for Karlsson, $1.5M of salary retention and a third? Why did Pittsburgh need to get a third in that deal?

All in all, though, Pittsburgh still stinks and they don't have a goalie. They'll be fun as hell to watch!

If SJS was in a position to turn this around quickly I get the move

Team is loaded with shit contracts and are behind the Habs in development with a shit cap

Grier messed up on this one

Exactly , SJS turned a Norris winner into nothing that helps now and maybe never .

If this was EK 2 years ago fine but not with a year of the ages .

Depends if hot Karl is mvp level again or back to his regular self.

A no brainer deal for Pitt , poker chips already in the middle of the table ......finish them all

Pitt isnt rebuilding and cant get cap space to make a difference while their big 3 are still in their prime

You'd rather they keep hot Karl?

Trading 11m in long term cap is extremely difficult. I'm kinda shocked they were able to do it and get assets. Having hot Karl helps they win trade lottos and they got a first.
