Habs Season Thread: 2024-25 Regular Season

I was thinking about us blowing our brains out to finish 8th going back 20 yrs and could not really find one year when we did.

One could argue 2009 when we got Mathieu Schneider in 2009 but that wasn't a Bergevin

Wisniewski in 2011 maybe but wasn't at deadline so was an actual trade AND was in December.

2013, nothing stood out.

2014 Vanek, was lauded by most.

2015 Jeff Petry and he stayed for years so doesn't apply.

2017 didn't blow brains out.

2019 a few trades like Max for Tatar and Nick but none that would be said to be blowing our brains out to finish 8th.

In the end it is a just a narrative to say under Bergevin we blew our brains out to finish 8th and get shitpumped in the first round. In fact since the salary cap, we lost in 1st round 5 times 06 09 11 13 and 17, and got out of first round in 08 10 14 15 20 and 21. We made semi finals 2x and finals once.

Whomever came up with that narrative is an idiot. Under MB we generally won the division, except the Covid years.

Before that we had a few 8th finishes but never sacrificed a first round pick or top prospect for a player, with maybe the exception of the Kovalev trade.

It’s a narrative not based on any reality.

The only time in the 21st century I recall the Habs trading their 1st rounder was 2008 for Tanguay, after which Timmins said he was planning to draft John Carlson with…

Yes but that was a summer deal. Then we had Linden in 1999. We rarely ever trade our own 1st round picks.
