Habs Season Thread: 2024-25 Regular Season

Players talk...best management scenarios can certainly attract higher grade free agents, how you treat your "assets" ..no?
Players always act in their own personal best interest so why not teams? Loyalty is a two-way street and in a salary cap system a team cannot afford to overpay out of sentimentality.

Higher grade fee agents dont pick up Montreal when other options are better

Good for us because for the most part UFA period is where you make your most cap mistakes

LOL You have a dose of "Hindsight is 20/20", there is NO WAY that anyone of you knew that Gally would be injured every year since he signed the contract .. if you think that I call BS ..
Predicting that the Gallagher contract would sour like bad milk was one of the single easiest predictions in the history of this board.

An undersized, fearless player who dives head first into the net, ends up on his ass with bodies on top of him slamming his head into the ice?

No, no, I really never could have imagined he would have started getting injuries left and right, and that by age 30, his body can't keep up with hockey.

You romanticized him.

The hope was that he would end up being an overpaid but still productive 2/3 liner rather than a random 4th liner. Like Gomez during the second half of that contract, it didn’t turn out that way.

I thought he would start breaking down by 30-31, not by 27.
He was done 5 minutes after the ink dried on the contract , the easiest bet on a player

Same as Price whose body was already breaking down before he signed his moronic deal

Unless your a superstar your going to get burned on these long term deals

A 110 point stud may dip to 70-80 and still be effective

A noticeable dip with Seguin, Gally , Backstrom etc...you get cap killers

Just say no to extra years and let him be some other teams issues

Problem is he was just an OK second liner at his peak

A dip to third liner at 6.5 is no bueno
An overpayment of 2-3 mil is not ideal, but won't kill your team and at least it fills a hole on the lineup that may be hard to replace. Problem is, that was the optimistic scenario. If he can somehow partially recover to be a 15-20 goal scorer (like Anderson), he at least won't be such a drag that will force us to throw in a high draft pick to ditch his salary.

That overpayment will kill your cap

Those 15-20 goals can be had by Pinard or a 1 mil UFA like Perry oar Maroon every year

Gally should of been traded for a nice haul

He signed at 28.. the contract is to 34. Based on Gally fitness level I thought he be good until 32 - 33.. maybe the full length of the contract.. $6,500,000 cap hit for a guy that scores 30 goals with his leadership qualities was fair for me.. no one would of guess that his career would be over due to different hand injuries..

He is fearless.. but his injuries stem from getting hit on the hands which could happen to any player whether fearless or not.. Like I said Hindsight 20/20

Disagree Legoalie, I anticipated only 2-3 "decent" years out of him at the time and so did many others. It's the way he plays, his body can't keep up even with his fitness level.

Didn't know he skated on his hands man.

He's lost a serious step in speed too, can't keep up.
