Hurricanes 2024-25 Post Mortem and Off Season Stuff

Neck injuries are the worst...cervical spine issues I would not wish on anyone as I sit here daily and deal with my own crap and pain, I know hockey comes with risks but Gudbranson mashing Fast into the boards in a meaningless game 82 just sucks for the guy because from all accounts, Quickie was the best teammate and a great bottom six role player with lots of value to provide any team throughout his career.
He won the Player’s Player Award 5 years in a row with the Rangers and the Steve Chiasson award here. To have played 11 seasons and win awards voted on by your teammates for more than half of his career says something.

Thompson and Tuch have 5 team no-trade clauses, Thompson’s kicks in on July 1. Tuch is going into his walk year, theoretically the price would be lower. Tuch is more of a wing, he only took 188 face offs and won 41%. Thompson wasn’t much better, 42.8% on 704 face offs. But that’s a teachable skill, size can’t be taught.
That's why I said it would depend on both of them wanting out, but honestly ... you'd have to imagine Thompson in particular is going to get sick of it all eventually. People want size, skill and gusto. Both of those guys offer that in spades, with differing tool kits. The rest you figure out. That said, Thompson would cost a LOT on the trade return.

Kyle Dubas made that deal for Karlsson, let him eat it. That’s a player and a contract we shouldn’t even be looking at.

If any 2C comes knocking, the real issue for me is is he better than what we have in the pipeline? and is he better than Kotkienemi? Start there and then try to find speed, size, hands.

KK's not that bad, it's not his fault he's been slotted wrong. He is overpaid as a 3C though.
I used to think he'd be a fairly good value by now, since Staal would be slowing down and KK's contract really doesn't suck so long as he's a contributing member of the top 9. The problems with all that turn out to be manifold. First, Staal is still going, albeit at a slightly reduced function. Second, when push has come to shove over the last two seasons and especially in the playoffs, KK has too often been slotted down to the 4th line. It's not just the offense either. His defense hasn't really ramped up either. He's basically the exact same player he was when he got here, once they got the ghosts out of his head at least. Yeah, he's not that bad. He's also not that good. You could pretty much take the 3rd line center on any Eastern playoff team and be better off ... except for Washington who are literally a two line team. It's been an issue for FAR too long and the Canes have been patient to the brink of fool hearty. Trade him, buy him out, I don't care. Just get a freaking center to actually do that job. 50-something points and a vaguely positive goal differential from the center on your secondary scoring line ain't cutting it if you want to actually contend.

Listening to Tulskys and Rods exit interviews it seems there is no doubt they are resigning Burns.
I liked most of that interview but to be expected, Rod praised Burns to a point of wanting him back should be no surprise. In a third pairing role I still like him, but at what cost and will Rod have the strength to tap the brakes on elevating him higher than he is? Much of that interview touched on the fact that this team was a final four team in a 32 team league and still there was disappointment…not a bad place to be overall for a franchise with plenty to be excited about moving forward!

Keep a link to that interview handy for the next time you read someone's claim that Dundon is cheap or the Canes can't afford to spend to the rapidly rising cap.
Meh. That's just people telling you whether they're serious about what they do or not. Sadly, most people in sports media are not.

Roddy is 100% lobbying for Burns to get another contract. Note that he's not really lobbying for Orlov, who I think is 100% gone. But before everyone goes thinking this is automatic, he made similar noises about Skjei and Pesce last year and they both were allowed to go to market without much more than a token offer. Now, Burns is in a different stage of career and life. He's already made his money and bought his ranch. At this point he's chasing two things ... a Cup and a group of guys he likes to be with. He's got both of those here, so maybe a token offer is all it takes.

I've said it before, but I'm perfectly fine with Burns coming back so long as they treat him like Ghost and not like Burns circa the 20-teens. The leadership and general vibe the guy brings is worth it so long as he's not on your freaking shutdown pairing anymore. That was really dumb, from a bunch of guys who aren't normally dumb. And maybe that's where Tulsky can put together an analytical case for backing off of Burns' usage that his coach will take to heart.

I think a 1-year, $5 million deal gets Burns back for another yet. That would be a deal I could live with, especially if—as Jeff suggests—they don’t give him first pairing minutes.

A one season contract for Burns is a perfect situation for a 35+ deal with performance bonuses. Maybe the total value of the deal is $5 million with the bonuses, but the base salary is something like $2 million.

This would work, I think. Then the true work for Tulsky would start ... convincing his coach to use him less. People forget that part of the GM's job is managing his coaching staff. That may be as important as managing the roster.

Good points. I don’t trust Rod to see that his old guys aren’t getting it done. I’d rather see us move on. He’s not going to sit Burns to put his best 6 on the ice if Burns’ streak in on the line.

If Burns is resigned, and you put him on the 3rd pair - what do you do with Ghost? A pairing of Burns and Ghost seems like it would be quite the adventure - and not in a good way. Also, if Burns is resigned, we absolutely have to have a 7th defenseman that actually plays and allows us to rest him - iron man streak be damned. I think we need that, regardless, though.

Burns is not going to be our 3rd pair RHD while Gostisbehere is on our roster. If we are absolutely determined to get Burns off our top pair he cannot play anywhere with Gostisbehere.

Slavin-Walker
Nikishin-Chatfield
Gostisbehere-Burns

That is no good.

Slavin-Chatfield
Nikishin-Burns
Gostisbehere-Walker

That is better but are we really going to see 1st pair Chatfield?

Slavin-Nikishin
Chatfield-Burns
Gostisbehere-Walker

(that is your stop caring about Left and Right hand shots option)

You can play around with all kinds of further permutations, but I'm pretty confident if we retain Burns, he is going to go right back onto that top pairing with Slavin.

This is good fodder for conversation, but I can't believe that Rod will play Burns anywhere except on the top line with Slavin. He probably wouldn't consider putting Nikishin on the top line, so at best Boom would go on the 2nd line. Of course, a solid new D-man would change everything.
