Juraj Slafkovsky, Montreal Canadien

Why pay him this summer?

No chance in hell I'm giving him a long term contract based on half a season of good play. If he plays good next season, I'm all for it.

The theory would probably be that you would be gambling and get a lower price.

When it comes to giving out contracts, I'm extremely conservative. Especially when the evidence I have (75% of his NHL career) is Slafkovsky not showing great offensive talent. I get that he's on the upswing for the last 20 or so games and that in all likelihood, this will continue. But I'm not down with the idea of giving him term & money yet.

I mean, if he foolishly accepts $4M x 8 years, then sure, by all means sign him for 8 years. The monetary risk is so low that it wouldn't even matter if he plateaued as a 35-40 point winger, the contract wouldn't be bad. I'd tell him to fire his agent if that's the contract he was presented with, though.

Yeah let him play another year, although we might end up paying more, we will at least do it with more data. Love the way he’s progressing though, I even feel he should have more points than he has, given 1) all the scoring chances he created that were not converted 2) the goals where he was a major factor but didn’t get an assist.

I've actually somewhat changed my mind on bridge deals, to an extent. As a fan of a team, I don't hate bridge deals for good players as much as I used to because they'll allow the team to have clear control of a player for the entirety of his prime if properly done. If we give Slaf a 3 year bridge deal, similar to what Zegras got (3 years, $5.75M AAV) then we'd have the opportunity to sign him to an 8 year contract at 24, which would keep him under control until the age of 32. After that, assuming he's not a future HHOFer, you cut him loose (or smartly trade him with 2-3 years left on the contract) instead of re-signing him once more.

However, for good to great player, bridge deals are the best way to maximize the potential earnings is to do what Auston Matthews is doing: Leverage your second contract directly with your pending Free Agency. And then, when said player is 25/26, sign another 3/4 year deal, maximize your leverage again, and finally, around 29/30 years old, sign the long term retirement contract.

For depth players, don't give a shit. Bridge deals are the only thing they should be getting.

Slaf doesn’t strike me as the type who will get his 8 year deal and then coast. But I could be wrong. I’d be leery about handing him an 8 year deal now . . . but there is a risk if you don’t.

I doubt he turns Judas. Risk is paying more but whatever, we can't be cap cucks

He looks like the kind of guy who if he doesn’t have a cup in fifteen years they do a bunch of poetic montages of him at trade deadline time basically begging him to be moved to a contender because everyone wants him to get his cup.
