All I know is hockey is costing me lots of $ for my boys and they’re is no way close to being the next McDavid
Regular middle class families take out second mortgages for it, they’re not rich. Is hockey expensive? Absolutely. Are the parents rich? Small percentage. Naming kids of former players is a bit much guys.

Ok let me put it another way:

hockey parents in the US tend to be more affluent vs their CDN counterparts

How’s that? 😉

My 9 year old is playing his first year of AAA and I'll probably spend around 15K this year. GTHL is very expensive, plus skill development, power skating, tournaments etc.

Luckily, my parents are helping out and my work threw in a sponsorship. Some good players went to AA because it's way cheaper from his team

In the US mostly rich kids playing? Aside from Hyman name a few NHL players that came from rich families. Maybe a handful?

You continue to be lost in your stereotypes.
Here is a list of the consensus top 10 US-based hockey prep schools. Their names alone are pretentious enough for one to assume that they are both expensive and probably almost exclusively white and Asian. I have included the day student and boarding student tuition fees to further buttress my point.

Now tell me again how I'm lost in a stereotype.

Avon Old Farms Day: $51,450 Boarding: $67,750

The Taft School Day: $49,250 Boarding: $66,300

Deerfield Academy Day: $45,480 Boarding: $63,430

Phillips Academy Andover Day: $44,800 Boarding: $57,800

Cushing Academy Day: $46,200 Boarding: $68,300

Culver Military Academy Boarding only: $54,500

Noble and Greenough School Day: $50200 Boarding: $56,000

The Salisbury School Day: $49558 Boarding: $63,755

Shattuck St. Mary Day: $36750 Boarding: $55,000

Choate Rosemary Day: $48480 Boarding: $62,960

You’re lost on the stereotype. Not every player went the private school route. Many that did had regular middle class families.

Is it easier on the rich? Sure. Are they the predominant parents? No way

Oh you mean you’re managing without being rich? Unpossible.

Only because your experiences make it seem so. I’ve been involved with hockey in the past too and most parents aren’t “rich”, they’re just dedicated to their kid and game. Many work a second job for their kid.

At least you have first hand knowledge. Always love it when a guy living in Edmonton thinks he knows more than people that experience it in the country in question for decades. The arrogance always gets me.

I'm pretty comfortably middle class but my parents are wealthy. If they weren't, we probably wouldn't be playing AAA. It's totally pay to play
So in Canada as well? Interesting.

Years ago I was in a dad’s group of players, this was when my son played, and I can recall 2 dads that could be considered rich out of 20ish. I get that people have long believed this, it’s just not true.

Now if you want to argue that wealthier families get their kids much closer to the nhl then sure, I can see that, but to say only rich kids play is just so wrong.

Lots of kids play hockey but parents who are serious about getting their kid an NCAA scholarship and/or into the NHL know that the most direct route is one of these hoity-toity prep schools. It's like how lots of kids play tennis but the ones looking to go pro all go to those academies in Florida like your kid.

Quebec doesn’t even offer the private programs offered here in the US or other parts of Canada that co$t $$$$

Here in the GTAA the stud kids will find a way to get resources/funds

Top minor teams with wealthy owners will fund their way and the CHL has a history of throwing funds to players and their families

Anthony and Chris Stewart`s family were poor but were funded over the years

I live near 8-of those schools, each of prep school strategies is to bring in overage junior players, 19-20 year olds from CHL lie about their age by 1-2 years as ringers - it’s an accepted practice.

All the CDN kids who come here are on full scholarships. Mathieu Darche for example left home at 16 to come here for Kingswood Oxford (high school) in West Hartford then went to Rosemary Choate in Wallingford

The price tag you see is the cost wealthy families & other US families who want to get their kids into Ivy Leagues pay not the hockey players except for the rare few

Rosemary Choate - is where the Kennedy’s and New England blue blood all went to school (Eatons on North America). Avon Old Farms is CT blue blood, Philips Academy MA blue blood yada yada yada

The endowment funds these “high schools” have will blow your mind

You live in the Hartford area?

My aunt was an english professor at the University of Hartford for 35 years so I've spent a bit of time there, although it's been many, many years now. The Whalers were still a thing the last time I visited.
Costs $60,000 per year...not talking Ivy leagues & the networking you buy for the $

My aunt used to head the English Language Institute at the UofH and taught English to many foreign students who were the children of Mideast oligarchs and royals. Part of her job was to go to foreign countries to recruit because international students pay through the nose for tuition compared to American citizens. She said that you could always tell the faculty parking lot from the student parking lot just by looking at the cars. My aunt drove a 1965 Volvo from 1965 to 1985. Then when that died she couldn't afford a Volvo on her salary and had to buy a Chevette. The students were rolling in with Benz's, BMW's and Porsche's.
