Laval Rocket Thread

I think Sal's point is mostly that elite hockey is really expensive and only accessible to families that can afford it, or can afford to borrow for it. Whether that makes them wealthy depends on the definition and perspective of what wealthy means. Some would consider a family with a million in assets as wealthy while others will see them as middle class.

Lots of kids get deals and discounts from their teams, etc. And I can tell you there are kids on my son's team for who I'm sure this is really a severe stretch. Having said that, tier 2 hockey in most of the U.S. is unwatchable.

Are those players the exception or the majority? Do you think they'll be able to keep going all the way?

This represents everything wrong with youth sport.

It’s pretty much a scam to separate people from their money, IMO. They prey on the anxiety of parents. We inquired about synchro swimming for Thing #1. Holy hell that is expensive. Everything is like that.

Fuck all that. We keep the kids busy with all kinds of sports (including hockey) and other activities, and while it’s not an insignificant amount of dough we sure as shit are not making crazy outlays for any of that. Our focus is on tuition costs down the road.

Not the majority, of course, as that would be an unsustainable business model for the owners of these organizations. As far as going all the way, only a tiny percentage of AAA players will play in college, and even less professionally. Men’s league is the ultimate destination.

As my younger son actually plays AAA hockey in the U.S. I can tell you guys that this notion (mostly from Sal) that most families here whose kids play AAA hockey are "wealthy" is not, on the whole, accurate. It might be the case where he lives - Fairfield County, Connecticut - but I've travelled enough with my son to see that it's not the case overall. Hockey parents tend to sacrifice a lot for their kids.
Yup

Unless your kids is good. You can get sponsorships.

It certainly would be. Fairfax County's median household income is pushing close to $100K. It's one of the whitest and wealthiest areas in New England.

A family with $1 million worth of assets in Edmonton or Winnipeg is wealthy. That same family with $1 million worth of assets in Toronto or Vancouver is middle class and probably a bit nervous.

I have met so many parents who are banking on getting their children a scholarship based on sports and investing countless dollars into training for sports so they could get a scholarship. We're taking that same money and investing it and savings. That way they don't have to perform they're just going to have their tuition covered.

isn't hiring a math tutor cheaper?

Yeah, you can’t bank on an athletic scholarship but . . . my older son is likely headed to an elite Ivy League school because of a sport, and while he’s a very good student, I don’t think he’d be on that path without his sport. The point is that if you have a kid with a talent in a certain field, be it a sport or something artistic, it’s probably worth investing in it if you can afford it, at least I believe it is.

The funniest part in the US, especially in the Northeast, schools lineup to hand out lacrosse scholarships.

F*ckin lacrosse! Until I moved here didn’t know there were even minor leagues for it..
