Fraser is a depth player and he's paid like one. His salary (at least most of it) can be eliminated almost instantly if they need cap space or a roster spot.

If they play him over more deserving players, that's an entirely different issue.

But in terms of problem contracts, Fraser's is near the bottom on the Leafs.

Yeah, this. If they knew that a binding arbitration award that they wouldn't be able to walk away from could be the result of giving him a qualifying offer, then why give him one? What, were they worried that there was going to be a bidding war for him on the open market?
 
It is pretty clear Nonis went into the off season with a certain amount of money in his mind that he would sign Kadri and Franson for. He isn't going to budge on that, right or wrong. So all these other smaller depth signings all fit his plan and round out the team.

If it is 2 million he wants to sign Franson for, that is pretty much what Nonis will stick by until Franson caves in.

I could, but I wouldn't because they all add significant value to the team.

Fraser detracts from it.

I mean, hey, if we were flush with cap space and the plan was to have him be the 7th guy who gets in once in a while, fine. But I can't stand these lunkheads playing way more than they should.

On the one hand, I love this, but on the other, I worry about getting our kids in.

Unless Raymond is penciled in for the 4th line, and Colborne gets a shot on the third, I'm not sure it's the best move.

Also, how the hell are they gonna pay Raymond that and sign Franson too.

There's got to be something going on that they just can't seem to get done on the trade front.

I do really like that theory someone had earlier about maybe Nonis not freeing up cap space so he can sign Kadri and Franson to cheap deals, and then shipping off Liles as soon as they're signed.

Raymond is only 4 years old than Colborne.
 
If Colborne's ready to play in the NHL, a little competition won't hurt him.

And frankly, his wildly inconsistent play in the AHL seems to indicate to me that he could use some more time down there anyways, unless he has a fantastic camp.
 
There is nothing going on. Thats why they aren't negotiating with Franson. There is $2 mill for him and thats it.

IMO Colborne makes the team either way, whether Raymond does or not.

He only makes about 6K or 7K above the minimum. We're talking about a real small amount of money.
 
Isnt Frazer McLaren a 13th forward?...leaving room for both?

That said, today, Raymond>>Colborne.

If you have to send him down and make him the first callup, so be it.
 
It'd be ****ing incredible if Colborne was on the third line and Raymond on the fourth.

I mean, if the goaltending holds up and Franson signs, I don't see how we don't get home ice easily.
