Leaf Rumours

That data is incomplete from last year, but from 2011-12, on the PP Dion Phaneuf had 4 goals on a slapshot and 38 were saved (misses weren't counted). Franson had 1 goal and 16 saves.

So Franson scored on 1 out of 17 slapshots that hit the net. Phaneuf scored on 1 out of every 10.5 shots. Not in the same league.

Because it would become a cap necessity if you're not using him as an all purpose #1. You can't spend money inefficiently in a capped environment. You either play him as a #1 or you trade him. Spending 7 million on a 30 point, 22 minute a game defenseman is beyond stupid.
 
And here are the 5 on 5 numbers from last year because they do exist.

Phaneuf scored 5 goals, 49 shots were saved, and he missed the net 24 times. So he scored on 6.4% of his shots, and missed the net on 30.7% of his shots.

Franson scored 1 goal, 39 shots were saved and he missed the net 22 times. So he scored on 1.6% of his shots, and missed the net on 35.4% of his shots.

So Franson actually missed the net more regularly than Phaneuf. Heh.

Dion moves the puck a lot better and is a lot more effective 5 on 5 and on the PK. His stabilizing force and multi-dimensional talents is why you keep him as the #1 for the long haul. No, it doesn't. It's a big pat on the back to Cody for him to even be in the conversation with Dion, but if you're choosing how to keep on the #1 PP unit should someone like Gardiner or Rielly push their way on with their higher level of puck creativity, you keep the guy you're paying 7 million dollars to be your captain and #1 defender.

Yet another example of why I trust numbers over what "people see". Numbers don't have biases.
 
The numbers have been posted here a few times. Phaneuf doesn't miss the net any more or any less, on average, than comparable players at his position.

When he misses, it just stands out more because he has such a hard shot. He was the most efficient Leafs dman on the PP last year. Leafs scored more goals with him on the ice on the PP, than with any other Leafs dman, including Franson.
 
Whats worse is that somehow Logan Couture, Zach Parise and Patrice Bergeron are better than Martin St Louis. Come on ESPN.

And for that matter Eric Staal, Getzlaf, Kessel, Hossa, Kopitar and Thornton.

They are so bad at this.

Those 3 always gets overrated because they're are perceived as super duper defensive players.

But I think you can only make the argument for Bergeron being the truly impactful defensive player.

Parise is the most overrated player in the league, by far. He hasn't been great in any of the last 3 seasons.

In terms of offense, no he's nowhere near a top 10 forwards, he a middle of the road guy. However, I would say he's defiently one of the best two way forwards in the game ranking behind guys like Crosby/Datsyuk/Towes... I guess it depends on what your defintion of a "top 10 forward" is.
 
My definition would be, if you did a random draft for this season, would Bergeron by the 9th forward taken?

I'd extremely doubt it.

Intangibles are always overrated in lists like this. Because when it comes down to it, you're going to choose the great offensive player over the great defensive player all the time.
