reims has been battling for his hockey life every year of his career, this is nothing new to him. He's always been the underdog.
 
I'd say that it is much more difficult to be the number 1 because you realize that if you stink there is nobody behind you to save the team. You just don't want to be the guy that ruins it for your team. I think this situation where you have another guy to step in incase you stink is much more easier to deal with mentally.

The Toskala situation is a great example. There was a huge difference in Toskala's mindset knowing that Nabokov was backing him up. Once he lost that mental advantage by becoming the number 1 in Toronto, he sucked.

Correct. The issue about management/coaches to have confidence in the player is unrelated to competition. I pointed this issue out to mbow last season when he was crapping all over Franson ... he was playing with poor confidence early due to the role they were giving him back then (in and out of the pressbox, bottom six, etc.).

my post was merely a response and not reflective of my sentiments about reimer.

i don't think that this will have an effect on his play.
 
You can't change who you are. Burke was being himself.

An ownership change was the one thing that was always going to do-him-in.
 
Burke was shafted....he did a brilliant job and deserved to see his plan through. The success we had last year and the success we're liable to have this year is virtually all a result of his work.

If Leiwecke couldn't be here while Burke was, that just illuminates how much Burke was shafted as a result of Leiwecke's ego....Burke did far more to deserve being here, than he did.


...all said and done now, and thankfully our GM is a Burke protege.
 
There's still something to be said about the theory that Nonis was running the show behind the scenes, so even if these are players acquired under Burke's regime, many of them may actually be Nonis acquisitions.
 
Burke always loved to give praise to those under him, he did it in Vancouver. Anaheim and then here in Toronto.....but don't kid yourself they were all his moves through and through.

The fact he'd deligate the grunt work of trades to his underlings doesn't change that.


Phaneuf deal was a perfect example, he sat down with his top aides/scouts to make a list of the top #1 Dmen in the league, targeted Phaneuf as one of them, reached out once and was denied.....tried again and found out there was an opportunity there and began work on a deal. Then once it's all said and done he heaped all the praise on Nonnis for having done the grunt work.....that's just a reflection of how much of a class act Burke was despite all his bluster, he wanted to make sure all those that worked for him got as much limelight as possible, to hep further their careers.

I've little doubt Phaneuf wouldn't be a Leaf if it wasn't for Burke tho....ditto Kessel, Lupul, Gardiner, etc.....(imo) Nonnis was never "running things behind the scenes"...he simply did what an assistant GM does, and Burke made sure everyone heard about it to prop Nonnis up as much as possible.

One thing I feel pretty confident saying Burke wouldn't have done, is hand out that Clarkson deal......so Nonis gets full credit or full blame from me, however that turns out.

I kinda question whether Burke would have done the Bernier deal too....and that may turn out to be one of Nonnis' most important moves.
 
I'm guessing you're right that he would have acquired Roberto.

He would have certainly pulled the trigger on that deadline deal that was a 2nd, Scrivens, etc. for Luongo.
 
did anyone else just get a notification from "the score app" saying that the leafs are exploring the trade market for Jake Gardiner?
 
I saw that wtf. The ONLY thing I can see happening is that gardiner was on every gm's list as the guy you ask for. He must have commanded a pretty penny but they never bit. MAYBE they want to see if gm's are still offering something high. And maybe they like Reilly that much more. But WTF is right.

If and only if we could get a number one centre would I package gards with something
 
It would be downright criminal to trade this kid after what he showed against Boston last spring. He was arguably our best player in a bunch of those games.
