Good sign for Rielly?

Carlyle seemed to be refering to Rielly staying here and then being released for the world junior tournament in Malmo, Sweden. Most NHL teams make their Team Canada juniors available early enough for the mid-December selection camp, but changes under consideration this year could see a later date. Forty games would bring the Leafs to Dec. 27 against the Sabres, with Canada playing its first game the day before.

**** the WJC and Moose Jaw. This kid belongs in the NHL and makes us a better team.

I am confident that a smart guy like Carlyle sees that by now.

Before the season, I was somewhat lukewarm to the idea of sending him to the WJC's, but if he keeps playing like he has (and/or keeps improving), then sending him to play anywhere else would make the Leafs a less competitive team. That makes the decision pretty easy.

But no matter what, at least we do have options. We'll see what he looks like by game #10 and by mid-December.
 
exactly. stupid meaningless tournament.

especially since holding Rielly off the team likely gives Finn a spot on the WJC team, and that experience would be much more valuable for him than for Rielly.
 
It'd be a great place to send him if he was struggling to adjust to the NHL game, but we didn't want to send him back down to junior for the rest of the year.

Thankfully, it appears he'd look more out of place playing in any level of junior hockey than he does playing against NHL competition.
 
Couple of tidbits from Dreger today on TSN...he claims the Leafs are looking for another forward and also that they are interested in Panthers D Kulikov.
 
Could be a really nice buy low time to land Kulikov, but year I can't possibly see us bringing in a 22 yr old defender without moving a young defender in that move (or another). Issue is, I don't think Kulikov is as good as either Rielly or Gardiner right now, however good he may end up in the future.
 
Yea im thinking the only way that they make a move for Kulikov is if they have a move for another defender somewhere else.

Say Jake Gardiner for Sean Couturier then Something for Kulikov.

At this point the team is 7-3-0 in 10 games, not sure i would alter too much with the team especially since we will be getting David Clarkson and Nik Kulemin back soon.

If anything the defense needs a RH shooter.
 
I like Kulikov. He's not really a Gardiner/Reilly replacement. He's more of a two way, block shots, play tough minutes kind of guy. And if you can get him for a reasonable price why not. Maybe the thinking is to replace Gunnar and save some cap space.

Can't see him being on the top of the Leafs todo list though.
 
We would only save on cap space this year as Kulikov is a 3rd year RFA this season. He will be due for a hefty contract extension, possibly along the lines of what Gunnarson is getting paid right now.
