Leaf Rumours

Sorry, that was just my clever way of saying "kozun stinks".

If you want more discussion, then we can discuss how kozun was one of those superawesome kings prospects that was way better than any of our crappy leafs prospects a couple years ago.

Good on the Leafs for not making the deal. I'm no fan of Franson's but it doesn't make sense to trade one problem child for another, we need to go in another direction.

The Kings have a few nice prospects; Kozun is not one of them.

Just to further Zeke's point:

The Los Angeles Kings Top 10 Prospects

1. Andrei Loktionov, Center
2. Viatcheslav Voynov, Defense
3. Derek Forbort, Defense
4. Jake Muzzin, Defense
5. Tyler Toffoli, Right Wing
6. Thomas Hickey, Defense
7. Maxim Kitsyn, Left Wing
8. Dwight King, Left Wing
9. Martin Jones, Goaltender
10. Brandon Kozun, Right Wing

Organizational Ranking: 8th

That's Hockey Prospectus from 2011

There's certainly teams that get the benefit of the doubt on a lot of their prospects. I think there's definitely a bias there.

I don't know. Of that top 10 Voynov, Toffoli and Jones look like pretty damn good players and Lokitonov, Muzzin, Hickey and King are solid NHLers just 2-3 years later. Thats a pretty solid turnout.

In comparison this is the Leafs Hockey Prospectus top 10 from 2011:

1. Joe Colborne, Center
2. Jake Gardiner, Defense
3. Jesse Blacker, Defense
4. Greg McKegg, Center
5. Stuart Percy, Defense*
6. Marcel Mueller, Left Wing
7. Jerry D'Amigo, Left Wing
8. Matt Frattin, Right Wing
9. Brad Ross, Left Wing
10. Sondre Olden, Left Wing

Gardiner is the only good NHLer. Frattin and Colborne are there, but stink.

Voynov is a #4 defender at this point, Toffoli a top 9 forward, and Jones is an unknown, despite looking really good in the AHL for the last few years and being spectacular in 10 games this season.

I don't know if I'd call that a top 8 prospect group though, even with Toffoli & Voynov there's some ceiling issues there.

But yeah, we're clearly over rated in that year as well, which is a bit shocking. I guess some of the prospect people got tired of how poorly they rated the Kadri, Reimer prospect group of ours.

And just looking at the Kings current roster Kopitar, Brown, Doughty, King, Voynov, Toffolli, Nolan, Martinez, Vey, Clifford, Lewis, Quick and Jones are all Kings draft picks. 13 out of a 23 man roster is pretty solid.

In comparison the Leafs have Kadri, Rielly, Kulemin, Gunnar and Reimer.

On that note, Marcel Mueller always struck me as a disappointment. He should have done more with his skill-set than he ended up doing. Disappointing.

I'm not sure. There are no star players there, but 7 out of the 10 are legit NHL players now. Thats a pretty good result I think. I'm not sure how many teams top 10 lists from the same year can boast similar production.

The star players like Doughty, Quick and Kopitar were drafted and developed by them too.

Can't really knock LA for their drafting and developing I don't think. Other teams fit zeke's claim, but not sure LA is one of them.

Toffoli may be a top 9 forward now, but it would be disingenuous to pretend that is his upside (not saying that is what you said). He's a surefire top 6 (and most likely top line) player in my book.

Like Detroit for example. They were number 1 in 2011 with this:

1. Gustav Nyquist, Right Wing
2. Tomas Tatar, Left Wing
3. Calle Jarnkrok, Center
4. Brendan Smith, Defense
5. Adam Almqvist, Defense
6. Teemu Pulkkinen, Right Wing
7. Riley Sheahan, Center
8. Tomas Jurco, Right Wing*
9. Alexei Marchenko, Defense
10. Jan Mursak, Right Wing

Tatar has been solid. Jurco looks good. Other than that no one has realy established themselves as anymore than a depth player on a mediocre team. LA's class was much better than that. Dwight King is arguably as good as any of those guys.

Still probably better than the Leafs though.

The Sens were #3:

1. David Rundblad, Defense
2. Mika Zibanejad, Left Wing
3. Nikita Filatov, Right Wing
4. Stephane Da Costa, Center
5. Jared Cowen, Defense
6. Jakob Silfverberg, Right Wing
7. Patrick Wiercioch, Defense
8. Derek Grant, Left Wing
9. Matt Puempel, Left Wing
10. Robin Lehner, Goaltender

Lehner, Z-bad and a bunch of crap. Not a top 5 group for sure.

1. Nathan Beaulieu, Defense
2. Alexei Emelin, Defense
3. Aaron Palushaj, Right Wing
4. Louis Leblanc, Right Wing
5. Alexander Avtsin, Right Wing
6. Jarred Tinordi, Defense
7. Danny Kristo, Right Wing
8. Mark Mitera, Defense
9. Joonas Nattinen, Center
10. Michael Bournival, Center

I have honestly never heard of Mark Mitera. wtf

@Hope_Smoke: Dreger "Leafs had interest in Del Zotto & there was some Gardiner talk but the Rangers wanted Franson. Leafs scared by MDZ's inconsistency"

The implication that franson is worth more than jake is as scary as it is unsurprising.
