Leaf Rumours

Clarification on this Bolland stuff, Dreger listed 3 possibilities:

1. Sign Bolland soon
2. Wait til UFA and see if Bolland's number changes
3. (way down the list) trade him.

If I'm Nonis I go with option #2- First wait and see if Bolland says he wants to stay here, if yes give him the rest of the season and playoffs to get back into form, based on his play down the stretch/playoffs in the offseason sit him down and figure out how many years/dollars he wants.

I don't believe anything Dreger says, but it is nice to hear that at least its possible that Nonis is just going to run out and hand Bolland a shiny new contract.

Bolland's a good 3rd line C, with a very inconsistent track record, and plenty of injuries to worry about. I don't like paying 3rd liners lots of money in the first place, and I gotta think Bolland is asking for $4+.

That has the potential to be a very bad contract.

We know Bozak and Kadri are here for the long haul. McClement has the 4th line C position locked up if we bring him back, and if we don't, there's always Holland.

But if we lock in another player at center by giving Bolland $3.5M to $4M or so, those are our three centermen for the next 4 years at least. Not sure how I feel about that, given that you'd think opportunities will arise where we can promote a kid to that pot (Gauthier?) or find another UFA.

I mean, I would be happy to have Bolland back, but this injury sucks because it robbed us of seeing exactly what he could do for us over an extended period.

Unless you give him something insane a guy like Bolland will always be easy to move. You'll never be stuck with a quality center for market value.

Bolland also said he'll have to keep skating with a modified skate likely for the rest of his career to account for scarring on his ankle.

Bolland on still feeling pain in the ankle: "It's going to be like that for probably the rest of this year and maybe in the summer."

On second thought maybe you don't want to sign the guy longterm. He was already injury prone enough without a bum ankle.

Yea this ankle issue will linger, wouldn't risk a long term deal on him

It'll heal, his injury is very similar to the one Karlsson had as well as the one Selanne took many years ago. In both guys's cases it took about a year for both of them to get back to 100%, it'll be about the same for Bolland which is why I think he shouldn't even bother coming back this year, take the rest of the season off and allow the injury to full heal, in the offseason train like a mother f-cker and come back to camp in the best shape of your career.

If Bolland wants to take a home town discount to stay, I'm all over that (providing that he comes back this season and plays well, showing that the ankle isn't an impediment to his level of play). If not though, I have no qualms with: Bozak-Kadri-Holland with the Bolland money going to an improvement on Kadri's other wing

Yeah, I'm not wild about throwing a lot of money or term at Bolland. If he has a strong finish to the season/playoffs, then I'd be fine with him getting $4-4.5M on a term of no more than 3-4 years.

Problem is, this is where the Clarkson contract really ****s us over. He can rightly point at Clarkson and point out that he's younger and better in every conceivable way, and is thus deserving of receiving north of $5M per season long-term. If this is the way Bolland's determined to go, then Nonis should let him walk without giving it a second thought.

Bolland is exactly what this team is lacking. A good 2nd line C and great 3rd line C, a vet with 2 stanley cups, depth down the middle. The salary cap is going way way up - it will be closer to 80 than 70 next year. I'd give him 5 mil/year.

Bolland > Holland.
