Leaf Rumours

I don't think it will take a conditional 1st to get him.

Goalie values just aren't that high. Especially for 3 mill dollar goalies who are currently injured.

The Florida Panthers have put Tomas Vokoun on the market, adding to a crowded group of goalies available for trade.

According to Chris Botta on FanHouse, it might be hard to trade Vokoun and his $6.3 million cap hit. However, a Western Conference GM told him, "No one is in any rush, no one is panicking right now. This is a long season and I think we've all learned there's no reason to give up assets just to patch a hole in the first half of the season. But in a month from now, when the playoff races get a little clearer? Yeah, I think you'll see some moves."

The Panthers will likely start to phase in Jacob Markstrom, a second-round prospect in 2008 who is in the Swedish Elite League. Markstrom is ready, but we may not see him until Vokoun is moved -- or until next season.

Now, here's one goalie you can justify paying 6+ mill.

Wow....ummm yeah, there's the answer to our goaltending woes right there....and I bet an ex Panther like Hagman who could help their offence would look really, really enticing to them.

If this is true, there is serious rape potential in this trade because if they're putting him on the market at all, they're seriously undervaluing him.

Hagman being one of the Leafs 'best' forwards, is one of the main problems. They need to get more 1st line talent, and you cant get that talent when you have money tied up into a bunch of 2nd liners.

Getting good-great goaltending would be a lot more important to this team then anything Hagman can provide. Gus + Vokoun would be one of the best duo's in the league. We'd go from bottom 5 goaltending, to possibly top 5 goaltending.

I'd rather go with Gus than trade one of our best forwards for a $6M goalie.

Then you undervalue the difference between a .920 SV% goalie, and a .900sv% goalie.

Which as much as I love Gusto, and have high hopes for him, that's all he currently has shown himself to be.

Slot Kulemin or Stalberg into Hagman's spot and add one of the top 5 goalies in the league into our net.

Really, when you demote Toskala, it's a cap neutral move, with a huge improvement in the area we need help in most.

Yeah. Vokoun is a legit top 5 goalie.

He's been there, or up there in save %, each of the last 5 years. His lowest posting was .919 since the lockout.

I'm not going to do the calculations, but I'd bet that he leads the league in save% since the lockout. Or is maybe behind only Backstrom.

You're just assuming that Gus, with two heart procedures done and with just 15 or so starts under his belt - and yet being a .900 goalie - is an accurate picture of what he's all about. I don't think he's been able to show himself at all, with the shitshow of a team we had for the first several games and freak health issues biting him in the ass now.

Let's give him a run of 20 games or so with him fully healthy and the team playing well and then see what we have. He may well himself be a .920 goalie and then we can save our leading goal scorer and use $6M on a top forward who gets stupidly put on the market like Vokoun has.

And this is probably legit, because the Panthers not only have Markstrom, but Salak, who is tearing up the AHL, and was arguably the second best goaltender outside the NHL last year behind Gus.

Vokoun only has one year left on his deal. Its not like he has a long term commitment that will put an end to Gus here.

Now that I've had a chance to see Gus a fair bit, it's become clear that he has some parts of his game to work on that just aren't consistent yet. He's not that elite level of goaltender yet....though all the tools, both physical and mental are there.

Vokoun is already as good as we could ever hope of Gus being, and having him signed through next year is a perfect mentoring situation for Gus. Re sign Gus long term this summer, plan to play Vokoun 55-60 times, Gusto 25ish times next year and hope that Gus forces his way into more playing time. If Gus falls flat, or doesn't progress, try to re sign Vokoun, if Gus takes the ball and run with it, let Vokoun walk.

Hagman isn't a big loss...not if it fills by far our biggest weakness as a team with elite talent.

Hagman for Vokoun would be an absolute coup of a trade for us.

And really that wouldn't even prevent you from adding a first line forward.

It would only add $2.7 million to the cap, which is easily erased by Toskala peacing.

Would add 3.3 no? Vokoun's 6.3 - Hagman's 3.0

That's why I called it cap neutral. When you send Toskala down, and call up Stalberg as Hagman's replacement, it's pretty close to a wash cap wise.

Actually how about Grabovski for Vokoun.......and we ship Hagman elsewhere at the deadline?

Florida do that?

I don't know...the reason I mentioned Hagman was because a lot of people in the organization would be familiar with him, and he really turned his ability on after he left. Guys in the organization who believed he had that ability would since feel vindicated and would probably lobby hard to bring him back.

I don't know if Florida would look to add a centre right now. Weiss is starting to live up to his billing, Reinprecht is playing out of his mind, and Frolik is their prized prospect.

Their top scoring wingers, aside from Horton is Olesz & Stillman tied with 13 points. Getting a solid top 6 winger locked up for a few more years on a reasonable deal might appeal to them.

If we wanted to move Grabo, I don't think he would be hard to move, but I don't think Florida is a fit.
