Leaf Rumours

we offer up Kessel and Kaberle, they give us Kovy in a heartbeat.

1st round picks be damned.

I'm sure Atlanta is just dying to pick up a player with a soon expiring contract.

Kovalchuk is likely the best player to be traded in the past decade. He'll get more than a Kessel and Kaberle.

Decade might be a stretch. But a 100 point/50 goal player will get more than Kessel and Kaberle.

That is "off the deep end".

No, a soon-to-be UFA player like Kovy would not even get close to a 35-40+ goal 22 year-old four years removed from being a top five draft pick and one of the top ten defencemen in the game signed to a reasonable contract and just 31 years old. Not even close. Not even remotely close. Atlanta would take any comparable deal like that and run to the hills laughing.

hehe. You're funny.

If you were dealing for Kovalchuk it would likely be on the condition of signing a new long term contract.

You'll have to pony up for that.

What?? Kaberle and Kessel for UFA Kovy? Even for signed Kovy, no way.

The package that lands him will not come anywhere near that, not even close.

And I do believe we have the assets to pull it off. And for the record, I'd give up our next two 1sts for Kovy. You just can't do much better than that guy no matter when or where you draft.

I'm not saying that isn't a good package - or value wise is a fair deal - it's just not what a team like Atlanta would want.

If they are giving up a top-5 player in the league, then they'll want more. Top prospects, a first, and a player like Kessel or Kaberle.

I would bet all the money in the word that if Atlanta was offered Kessel and Kaberle they would take it without even thinking twice.

They won't get one player that good in the deal. Guaranteed.

If Kessel really is a 40 goal player making 5.5 then why would you guys want to pay 9 million for 10 more goals per year?

Hmm.

Everyone knows their backs are to the wall.

If they don't trade him, they'll lose him for nothing.

That drops his value substantially.

If he had another 2 or 3 years on his contract, then he'd get that package, but most certainly not now.

LW Ilya Kovalchuk

This one was floated on the FAN last night.

At first glance you laugh, but it gives them two ~25 goal wingers, a top offensive defenceman, and a prospect at forward, all for a bit more than Kovy alone on his next contract. Poni could probably be convinced to re-sign for ~3.5 or so and play with his BFF Antropov, Kabs could play with Kubina and some of his former Leaf buddies.

LA could do better offer-wise, but convincing a Frolov to sign in Atlanta might be tougher and more expensive than Poni.

Atlanta would almost certainly take Kessel and Kaberle for Kovalchuk.

The question is why in their right minds would the Leafs do a deal like that? No matter the issue that it's been widely reported that Atlanta isn't going to let anyone talk to Kovalchuk first, presumably since he'll be wanting to test out the market in the off-season.

I'm not sure Atlanta wants that package.

Kabs is good, but only one year away from UFA. Poni is a UFA, maybe re-signable. Haggy gives them some goals and Dido is a throw in. I think it looks better at first glance than upon further consideration.

I'm not sure a trade for Kovy is doable without Kadri in it.

But if it is, the offer I'd go with is:

Grabo, Hagman, Gunnar, and then a couple of prospects like Hayes and D'Amigo.

They get three young roster players - Grabo capable of 50-60 points, Hagman 25+ goals, and Gunnar with quite a high ceiling so who really knows. And then D'Amigo wowed people at the juniors and Hayes is a project but a bit of a high ceiling apparently.

End up with (if we re-sign Poni and Stajan) next year:

Kovy Kadri Kessel
Poni Stajan Kulemin
Stalberg Bozak Hanson
Blake Mitchell Orr

Kaberle Komi
Beauch White
Schenn Finger
