Leaf Rumours

I'm not saying that isn't a good package - or value wise is a fair deal - it's just not what a team like Atlanta would want.

If they are giving up a top-5 player in the league, then they'll want more. Top prospects, a first, and a player like Kessel or Kaberle.

For an unsigned Kovalchuk that is a great deal for Atlanta and I see no reason they wouldn't want that type of deal. No doubt they would like draft picks as well, but it'll be tough to beat that offer as long as he refuses to sign.

Of course he's serious.

If Kessel matures into a consistent 40 goal scorer and Kabs maintains his high level of play for another 5-7 years, that's a bad trade for us.

If you guys believe that Kessel truly is a 40 goal threat year in and year out then why make the trade in the first place?

And it was a bad trade - mostly due to the fact that Heatley forced us to trade with one team.

ah yes, another "bad trade".

seems like every single comparable was just a "bad trade".

I guess Kovy will be the first "good trade".

IF Kessel matures... but Kovy is already more than you could ever expect out of Kessel and only a few years older. Kaberle is very good... but he has really come back to Earth after his amazing 10 game stretch early on this season. He's a 50 or so point defenseman which is very good... but Kovalchuk is probably the 4th best player in the league. Shit, at 26/27 Kovalchuk might not be done improving. This guy could be a 60+ goal and 120+ point player.

I wouldn't.

It'd be a sideways move to lose Kessel in the same deal where we're getting Kovy.

Unless you meant, why trade for Kovy if you have Kessel, in which case, is the answer not obvious?

That's all very possible, and I am fully on board with Kovy being an upgrade over Kessel, but we need to keep all the prime offense we have and add to it.

Adding Kovy and subtracting Kessel - while losing Kabs too - does nothing for us. Except maybe turn us into Atlanta 2.0, while Atlanta becomes Toronto 2.0 with Nik and Kubina already there.

Oh zeke.

If you can't recognize that Heatley demanding to be traded to SJ had any impact on the deal then there is no point in arguing.

so you've admitted that the leafs have the assets to make a Kovy deal.

good.

What do you imagine the deal would look like? Kessel isn't getting traded and Burke already said he won't ask Kaberle to waive his NMC.

Maybe a guy like Schenn/Kadri + for Kovalchuk.

Except you guys have the GM and the franchise that can attract the players to build a good team around Kovalchuk which is something Waddel was never really able to do.

Kovalchuk is definitely the type of player that you can build a team around. Kessel and Kaberle are both very good complimentary players that would be great to have with Kovy. However if your only means of landing (a signed) Kovalchuk is by trading those two away then you do it... and you giggle your ass off about it.

No, sorry, that makes us a worse team overall. And there really are no big UFAs that will be available this year other than Marleau, and he may get priced too high due to demand and lack of supply.

I'd much rather not make that trade and then just hope he goes UFA and try to get him for free then.

Assuming he doesn't reup with the team that trades for him, his negotiating rights could be had for relative peanuts at the draft.

I dunno, we've got very good primary assets in Kaberle, Kessel, Schenn, Kadri, and White and we've got very nice secondary assets in Grabo, Hagman, Kulemin, Stalberg, Bozak, Komisarek, Beauchemin, Gunnarson, Gusavsson, and a bunch of other decent prospects as well.

YOU. DON'T. HAVE. ANY. 1ST. ROUND. PICKS.

Lots of teams can put up an offer equal to the likes of Schenn, Kadri, Gunnarsson, ect.
