Leaf Rumours

The only way you are replacing phaneuf is if Gardner and/or Rielly pan out. It's not like #1 dmen are any easier to get than #1 centers.

That's the assumption you have to have if you deal Phaneuf.

But it's an exciting prospect, that Reilly could be better than Phaneuf, and Phaneuf could net #5, which could get us a Monahan, and thereby really round out the team with a glut of 25 or under elite players: Kessel, JVR, Franson, Gardiner, Rielly, Monahan, Bernier/Reimer. That's potentially a dynasty, especially when you sprinkle in Lupul, and then the role players like Kulemin, Gunnar, etc.

Two ifs. Rielly better than Phaneuf, and Monahan becomes as projected.

Neither are actually very big ifs at all.

They're hypothetically possible outcomes, but they're certainly not probable like you seem to be inferring here. There's no guarantee that Rielly becomes a Norris Trophy candidate by the age of 22 like Phaneuf was, and Monahan definitely needs some seasoning in Ottawa. I'm not at all certain that he could make the jump effectively next season and be any more of an impact player than a guy like Seguin (11-11-22) was as a rookie.

Canes have 2 firm offers and a 3rd nibbling on 5th overall. Toronto is out. Carolina may wait until 4th pick to make a deal.

Dredger says the Leafs are out on the 5th pick.

Nothing wrong with that. As much as a Phaneuf for the 5th/plus would be a fair deal we simply have nobody to replace him on the backend. Try to move up to the 10-15 spot or stick with the 21st overall and draft a guy like Rychel who we badly need anyways.
