This is just a bad trade for a bad goalie who is barely better than Hutch.

Hutchinson has never been able to log a starter's duty while Rittich has done that, albeit at a mediocre level. It's just insurance. They sure sound like they're worried they could lose Jack at any moment.

I'm not thrilled about it but it's better than not acquiring one. I do not like the throwing draft picks around like candy for rentals part of today.

I'm not greedy, I'll take a 1, 1A, or even a 1B

Rittich is a backup calibre goalie. Fine if we think Jack is a guy who can give us 20+ straight starts in the playoffs, but if we have at least a mild head injury if we're thinking that is likely at this point.

Where I'll give Dubas a bit of a pass is that the goalies I was most interested in (Kuemper & Raanta) have become huge injury question marks. Next down the list from them was guys like Dreidger & Reimer, but I question whether playoff-bound teams like Florida & Carolina would've had any interest in trading them at all, let alone to an Eastern conference rival.

So how I feel about this move is largely going to hinge on what happens with Ullmark, I guess.

- we get a comparable goalie to Fred, but for way cheaper
- leaves us tons of capspace
- dubas paying all these extras for retention means he's gonna use all that capspace

I don’t love it either, but this is probably going too far in this assessment.

But they probably think this is all they need. A healthy guy who’ll accept the platoon role with a smile and who can just be average as an insurance policy. Plus the fact that they saw him first hand stone us this year likely gave him an edge.
