Leafs acquire David Rittich from Calgary

Honestly though...after doing a quick look through the rosters of any team that's even remotely likely to sell...I'm not even really sure what's left out there for Dubas to spend all of that $3.2M on.

could be someone completely under the radar we didn't know was available.

The only completely under the radar players he could acquire would be either someone from a team that nobody thought would be a seller, or if he trades for a non-rental in spite of the fact that the expansion draft is coming up.

Yeah this is what I didn't want them to do. If you get a goalie make it a good one. And yeah hall would've been nice for that package. Don't mind the Foligno price but this deal + the hall deal was rough.

Hate to say it but I think the Rittich over a better goalie allows them the cap and roster flexibility to bring Freddy back at some point,

If i understand the math, and i dont, they have just enough to in fact to this. However, if you bring him back you plan on using him, and then a 3rd for a better than Hutch rental seems absolutely insane.

That's what I was thinking yeah. Has to be the only explanation. If Fred was done they'd aim higher. This is just a Hutch replacement.

A 3rd is a mighty price to pay for that when you have the division kinda locked up
No matter who the return is, this is a dumb comment. A third is never a mighty price to pay for anything. This is just insurance in case one (or both) of their two broken goalies falls apart in the playoffs. I disagree because at that point you're not beating Tampa or Colorado with Rittich. Might as well go with Hutch and rip the bandaid off. But IMO that's the thought process here.

If you look at what the caliber of goalies yield at deadlines in recent years a 3rd is more than most and Rittich is meh

It's a 3rd round draft pick. Who cares. That's not what I'm underwhelmed about with that trade. That is stupid nitpicky.

Unfortunately I see it as a “just in case Fred can’t actually come back” insurance policy.

not good coverage though.
