Leafs acquire David Rittich from Calgary

Hate to say it but I think the Rittich over a better goalie allows them the cap and roster flexibility to bring Freddy back at some point,

The one hope I have is that a better goalie than Rittich hasn’t been traded yet.

It’s possible that Buffalo keeps Ullmark in the hopes of re-signing him, that Carolina & Florida’s extra goalies were never available, and that the prognosis on Arizona’s injured goalies is worse than we know.

In which case, Rittich might’ve been the best goalie Dubas could get. I’d certainly take him over the guy Colorado chose as insurance (Dubnyk).

It's a 3rd round draft pick. Who cares. That's not what I'm underwhelmed about with that trade. That is stupid nitpicky.
Oh, to be clear, i'd be more irked if i were you that this is not Ullmark, or even Bernier, who i suspect go for the same or less, but if the plan is to still roll with Fred, why even do this? You can afford to roll with Hutch where you are in the standings.

If Buffalo cant sign Ullmark, why would they keep Ullmark?

They do need a goalie next year, and he’s been pretty much the only good thing about their team this year.

Maybe they’re worried if they trade him elsewhere and it’s a good fit for him, it’ll become a sure thing they don’t re-sign him.

I dunno. Just grasping at straws here. We’ll see what happens with him today.

If im Linus Ullmark.

Unless they backup the money truck right now im hitting the open market and emerging out of that sewage plant fire.

You're not getting it. This is playoff insurance, not regular season. That's what deadline trades mostly are across the league.

Fair enough i guess. Personally i think if you are using Riddich, Fred or Hutch for an extended period in a serious, they fucked.

For sure. Like I said, I’m grasping at straws here, because I’ll be majorly pissed if Ullmark was in fact available and we opted for Rittich.

But if Ullmark or any other goalie that I’d rank higher than Rittich don’t move today, then I’ll feel a lot better about this trade.

This is my opinion as well and the reason I find this pointless. But imo that is their rationale for getting this guy.

Id prepare yourself by making a 7D tier list too

Like you gave me shit when i suggested Aaron Dell for like a 7th as Hutch insurance. I feel like Riddich for a 3rd is insanity cause while he's better than that, not better enough where it remotely matters

Tldr: they've got three NHL goalies for the playoffs. One is injured, another is barely scraping by and unproven and the other is a backup. Maybe their idea is a diversified portfolio makes it more likely one gets as hot as they need him to. But I'm not too excited if they have to use a Rittich vs a Tampa.

Nah, hutch might be better than Dell. Rittich is better than both. But yeah, I agree. It's still pointless.

Dell was just inserted as waiver wire caliber goalie. There will be 1-2 of those dudes that go today for a 7th
Rittich is better than all those guys will be. He's not good enough if they have to rely on him in any way but he's infinitely better than fucking Dell. If they need Rittich to get by the north Division he may be worth it if Jack is back for the heavyweight teams like Tampa and Colorado.

Optics have no place in this business, nor do silly hurt feelings.

It’s not about “feelings”. It’s about having seen the guy fall to pieces under the pressure of this market before.

And it’s not like the .910, .907 & .904 save percentages he’s put up this year and the last two seasons make him an obviously better choice than Rittich.
