Islanders clear cap space for this season (Grabner's signed for this year at $3M, and then becomes a UFA) and the Leafs clear room for four more NHL contracts. That seems to be the crux of the deal.
The only thing that surprises me a bit is that they gave up on Gibson.
This sounds like a flushing of the system a little bit.
Finn's had his share of injury concerns in the past and a real bad season last year. There are going to be other D prospects his time could go to.
Verhaeghe's already been passed in the system by a few guys. It sounds like they want Freddy the Goat, Slick Willie and others playing centre this year. No room in the Marlies.
Nilsson was never much. More ice time for Percy, Loov, Valiev.
Gibson? I guess they want to see what they have in Bibeau. Not unreasonable.
They have solid depth up front. Though they lack top end talent and The D is still a mess. But you look at teams like Florida a couple years ago sneaking in the playoffs and who knows. It's not hard to make the playoffs. We've just witness a pathetically insane ineptitude the last few years. It will take a while to get the system down though.
