Leafs' Prospect/Marlies Discussion Thread!

Is lof really going to gloat every time he scores a goal as if we all don't want him to be a super elite stud? Come on, Faith. Come on.
Gloat? There's nothing to gloat about one way or the other yet. I'm just poking fun at the notion that he's not actually looking like a really good prospect because of meaningless NCAA stats. A number of you have said we should cash in on the hype and trade him, as though he's not for real. I think he looks pretty real. None of us knows who will end up being right, but we're definitely making our thoughts known at the moment.

Update to my updates update

1) Robertson
2) Niemela
3) Knies

- Unchanged at the top.

4) Holmberg
5) Minten
6) Voit
7) Steeves

Steeves is fine and still hovering around that PPG mark, but Voit & Minten are both showing the type of sustained excellence that legitimate top 6 or even 1st line players show at this age. I am dropping Hirvonen from this tier though. .42ppg in Liiga just isn't it at 20-21 yrs old.

8) Hildeby
9) Grebyonkin
10) Hirvonen
11) Moldenhauer
12) Villeneuve
13) Tverberg

So...is it time to start taking Hildeby seriously? .935 in 10 games this season after a .931 in 7 games last season. 6'6, 21 yrs old, elite in the SHL (in smallish sample). I'm taking him seriously. I'm also taking the Russian kid seriously. These are both real prospects with legitimate NHL upsides. Everyone else there is fine. Hirvonen still looks like a future depth forward, Moldy is a top 5 player in the USHL, Villeneuve is having a perfectly solid rookie season in the AHL for a 6'2 RHD, Tverberg has also been fine.

14) SDA
15) Hoefenmayer
16) Akhtyamov
17) Kressler
18) Peksa
19) Abruzz
20) Petruzelli
21) Miettinen

Veeti Miettenen, back from the dead? A breakout 3rd NCAA season says so. 1.06ppg is fine for a kid we had limited excitement for. Definitely puts some gas into the possibility of a professional career and if this keeps up I'll start pushing him up this tier. Not a whole lot of changes here...Abruzz at .6ppg as a 23 yr old is meh, super meh. Petruzz a .901 sv is less than meh. Not sure what to do about SDA. Do I have him too low or Steeves too high? PPG in the AHL at 22 is a nice surprise, but he's a still midget who I struggle to see a role for outside of being a top 6 forward. One of the reasons I have Steeves high is that there's a likely floor as a good 4th liner, which to a team like ours is kind of important. Getting a super short look at him in the NHL, you can see the puck skills and vision, but he struggled with making decisions quickly (had a few awful turnovers). Probably the biggest single difference between the AHL and NHL is how fucking long you can hang onto the puck in the AHL for waiting for a play to develop, which is ideal for a skill midget and sometimes leads to them putting up big offensive numbers without a NHL level carrying skill there (Bracco, for example).

Almost February so here we go

1) Robertson
2) Niemela
3) Knies

No changes

4) Holmberg
5) Minten
6) Voit
7) Grebyonkin

Steeves stagnating offensively in the AHL pushes him down, Greby looking like a real prospect in the KHL pushes him up. Greby sure looks fucking intriguing. This progression continuing until the end of the year probably pushes him up and makes the top 3 group a top 4 group.

8) Hildeby
9) Moldenhauer
10) Steeves
11) Hirvonen
12) Villeneuve
13) Tverberg

A bit of reshuffling here. Steeves down to 10th and he's trending towards that 3rd tier of guys who might be functioning depth one day. .83ppg just isn't enough at his age to hope for middle 6 NHL production. Moldy moves up on age/upside considerations. Looking to move Hildeby up, but he's dropped to a .921 in 14 games in the SHL now. Gotta keep an eye on that.

14) Akhtyamov
15) Joe Miller
16) Peksa
17) Lisowsky
18) Hoefenmayer
19) Abruzz
20) SDA
21) Miettinen
22) Petruzelli
23) Kressler

A fair bit of movement here...we've had a wild Joe Miller sighting, and he's putting a better PPG as a 20 yr old than Tverberg or Miettenen so he jumps well up this group of mostly long shots and non prospects. The AHL 22-24 yr olds have all calmed down after being at or near PPG, so their rankings are starting to reflect near non prospect status with kids like Lisowsky and Miller moving up. All in all a reshuffle that reflects where we are in the season being a bit more data than we've had to work with so far. Akhtyamov with a .944 in 34 VHL games deserves the top spot and looks way overdue for KHL shooters. He could move up aggressively if he gets some KHL reps and looks good in them. Historically, decent or better Russian NHL goalies are already good KHL goalies by 21 yrs old.
