Leafs' Prospect/Marlies Discussion Thread!

Yeah, imagine being a young Russian of fighting age and agreeing to go back to the country. Can't see it being much more coin than he could have gotten in the SHL, Liiga, or Austria.

Brooks (4th round), SDA (3rd round), both were good as Marlies - and had looks in the NHL.

Minten, 6'2" 190lbs - not small, not middling.

I thought he was smaller but frankly that l makes his pedestrian d1 production look even worse.

Yeah...don't understand the love here. That D1 production was boosted by big PP numbers and lining up with Stankhoven for the first half of the year. When Kamloops loaded up at the trade deadline, he was pushed off those cushy spots and his playoffs and memorial cup were down right terrible. Some injuries were mixed in there, but still...he's looking like a bottom 6 role more and more.

He had a very good first half of the season, then completely fell off.

Its too bad because he is big, smart, good skater, good shot. It he add any sort of offensive talent/playmaking ability he'd be a great prospect for this team.

It would be ideal if any of Minten, Hirvonen, Tverberg, Abruzese, Holmberg developed into a solid two way 40 point center that could allow JT to shift to the wing. But not looking that promising at this point.

Holmberg at least was able to be pretty productive in his limited opportunities last year.

I don't think they really have any prospects with top 6 center upside. Holmberg may be their best if you even want to call a 24 year old a prospect, but he's probably a 3C at best. Too bad but it certainly feels like these legit top 6 centers are becoming more and more rare. It's not easy to hold your own in that slot. Even a monster offensive producer like Tavares struggles and would be better off on the wing.

Agreed. But also if the 2C wingers are JT and Willy then we don't need a stud 2C. Can get away with a guy that is really a 3C, but is solid all around and has enough puck skills to play with top players. A Rodriguez type. Holmberg, Minten, Hirvonen could be that. Not betting on it, but thats all we need.

What does depth stars mean?

EDIT: nvm just read it. Yeah.. So basically they draft a lot of guys with outside chances of being decent.. Basically they have a whole lot of guys who can potentially become 3rd/4th liners and supplement their talent on their ELCs for a similar price as they cost on the open market. For that reason, I don't get so horny over much of their prospect pool.

But they haven't had many picks so it's not all Kyle's fault. I do wish he swung for the fences with some of his earlier picks though. Knies is great, Sandin was apparently worth a late 1st years into his career.. That's pretty much all that has excited me.
