Kappy would work better as a LW anyway. He's not exactly a high level set up guy from his strong side anyway and using his speed to create gap, stopping and button hooking on the RW is dumb for him. Having the option of dropping his shoulder to cut in on his forehand, or hard stop into having good vision of the attacking zone is a way better use of his toolkit imo.

Assuming we don't move Kadri:

That russian dude they are about to sign will replace Ennis. They still have petan, goat and that marchment hack that everyone jerks off over. There will be moves I think. That depth is awesome but I'd imagine they'd want to shore up their d with at least one more vet. And we know dubas was going big game hunting at the deadline so I fully expect him to go hard for a huge name on d this summer.

I guess both require Babcock getting fired, so yeah, that works too. I've just given up waiting for Hyman to stop suckling at the tit of premium minutes and line mates.
 
The more I think of it the more I'm in favour of packaging Kapanen, a 1st and maybe someone like Dermott for a big name d. Remove the middle class. Go big game hunting.

This pushes bracco up to a top three line (which may not be a downgrade) while serously upgrading the d. I don't know.. from everything I read it really does sound like dubas is going to make a big splash. Getting rid of marleau, Zaitsev and brown would be a nice step one to give him some flexibility.

The easy thing to do would be to get rid of those guys and leave the team the same after that by replacing them with marlies or cheap options. But that doesn't necessarily improve the team (addition by subtraction is a hell of a thing but in theory it shouldn't improve the team at least). I don't think he settles for that.
 
If we are moving a player I'd be moving Kadri. His contract is easy to move, he's still got that 30 goal scent, and should have enough value to bring us a solid return.
He'll be getting to that age where players with his play style start to wear down. All that along with his complete meltdowns the last 2 playoffs are enough for me to be ok with moving him.

No shot I move Nylander after the season he had.

As CJ said, ignore all nylander rumors. He's not getting moved. I agree that it would make sense to move kadri but man... It better be a great return. That contract is golden. But I suppose they are going to lose him for nothing when his contract expires anyway. May be worth getting something for him now. With Kapanen you can wait to trade him when he starts making real money (his next contract).

Lots of options. And ultimately a lot will depend on what other teams are willing to do.

I don't see how we fit that under the cap though, even with the other moves discussed.

I don't know if I buy the "make a splash" talk that's out there. We're proper cap ****ed next year and Dubas knows it. I think that chatter is out there, and dropped by Dubas more as a reminder to the Marner camp that no one in the organization is satisfied with losing in the 1st round, and that stupid salary demands can be met with a "splash" of a trade.

Even if he can manage the Marleau situation, as well as trade both Zaitsev and Brown for minimal cap hit coming back, we're still tight against the cap with Marner at ~10.0.
 
So torn on Kadri

-Provides so much value at C, is paid like a 3C while being a legit 2C. Will be so ****ing hard to replace unless we slot Nylander into that 3C slot, which might be a waste. Might be better off getting 18+ next to Auston than 15+ driving his own line

-But...can't ****ing trust him now.

I don't necessarily mean they'd acquire a subban or anyone on an expensive contract. That's straight up not happening. But there are plenty of great d out there on cap friendly deals. That will be their target.

I imagine Edmonton would love a coach like Babcock. Until he's actually there and plays Lucic with mcdavid.

Game #2 of their series for the Marlies tonight on TSN2 @ 7PM.

Rosen and Borgman both appear to be out due to injury after game one. Rosen fell into the boards pretty violently, but seems to have avoided a concussion. Borgman took a head-shot which the other player was suspended for, so he might have another concussion unfortunately.

Yegor Korshkov will also make his Marlie debut. Hopefully he's got more to show at the AHL level than he did in the KHL the past couple of seasons.
 
I think they are regardless of who is the coach. Even if its not to start game 1 they will have significant roles.

They only have Rielly, Muzzin, Zaitsev, Dermott, Rosen and Holl under contract, and if they can't do anything about Marleau they have no choice but to trade Zaitsev to resign Johnsson and Kappy. So there really isn't anyone standing in their way.

Babs has had no issue playing young players.
 
For what it's worth, for game #1 of this series, Babcock was sitting in the press box beside Brendan Shanahan.
